I should have updates in the next month for both cars. We'll leave it at that.

Ok so it appears I'll be back to wrenching the week of Aug 5th.
Guarantee I will be spending every waking available minute putting these cars together that week. Lots of updates coming soon for both lifted and lowered cars!!!

Updates soon!!
I should have the full lift kit installed in a few weeks max. Just need to finish up the red car first. But as soon as that's done I'll have the time and space to focus on the winter car. Check back soon!

So I encountered a snag. I went to install the front lift plates last weekend and quickly realized the passenger side driveshaft hits the subframe when pushed down too far. I've thought of a solution that involves lowering the subframe by about 2.5 inches. The lower trans mount will have to be custom made, the subframe spacers will have to be custom made, the sway bar links will need to be lengthened and a custom longer steering shaft will need to be fabricated. I'm picking up the materials for the subframe spacers tomorrow and gonna try to get them welded up this weekend. I'm still aiming for a bolt in lift kit. Although now it will involve many more parts.

Does this mean you'll lose 2.5 inches of ground clearance?

Kinda yes kinda no.
The spring perches in the rear stick down pretty far after the angle of the rear axle was pushed down. I believe the exhaust is the lowest part under the body of the car. True ground clearance is measured to the lowest part of a vehicle. Usually the differential in say, a 4x4 truck. So yes, the front of the car will loose 2.5" ground clearance. But, the front subframe won't be as low as the rear spring perches, and only an inch and a half or so lower than the exhaust. Even truck lift kits lower the front end ground clearance by adding a cross member that loweres the front control arms (IFS setup. All half ton trucks made in the last 10+years) Either way, with the 2+" of clearance gained with larger tires and the 3.75 inches gained with the lift, minus the 2.5" by lowering the subframe. It should still be 3.5-4" higher than the stock clearance. Plus the ball joints won't be as stressed. It's still gonna look cool as f*ck hahah

Damm that really more work!! Do the same as alot of people in vw community and cut a half moon piece of steel/ notch just over the axle to clear the frame. That done alot of time in old vw mk1 to mk4

So, another update:
I picked up the metal to fabricate the sub frame spacers. The subframe attaches to the car in 6 spots. But unfortunately I only got enough to make the front 2 and middle 2 spacers, thinking I was gonna have to use something else for the rear 2. Turns out, I can use the same 2.5" square tubing to make the rear 2 spacers, but they just need to be a little longer. So with the front 2 spacers cut, drilled and mocked up in place, and a jack under the back of the subframe jacked to the right height, I can now see where the subframe will sit. Problem here is the driver side cv shaft us just damn short. The shaft was pulled out from the trans side cup :( Either gonna have to find a longer drive shaft or lower the engine. Pros and cons Longer driveshaft Pro: •probably can find one from another year/model pretty easily. Easily replaced if oem size is found Con: •doesn't change the angle of the cv shaft which will be significantly more than stock with the 3.75" of lift creating more wear on the joints •may not find a suitable substitute/necessary custom shafts Lowering engine/trans Pro: •restore or partally restore factory cv shaft angles •direct replacement cv shafts •lower center of gravity Con: •hoses, lines, wires, exhaust, shifter cables all must be kept in mind or extended where needed •some sort of custom spacers between the engine/trans and it's mounts. •will need quite a few specific metric bolts I'm also having a bit of an issue finding the 2 metric bolts with the right thread pitches and length to fasten the 2 middle subframe spacers to the body. When I find a good source for hardware I think lowering the engine is the best choice. Thoughts?
