Tyre wear and tear

I bought a used yaris in jan 2008 and the tyres had reasonable treads on them for a car done 17000kms. By september 2008 I had to change the front tyres. Now in June 2010 I see the front tyres have taken quite a bit of beating and may soon need to be changed. The odo is around 28800kms. I reckon when I first changed it, it probably was 21000kms.We dont run too much and Im a careful driver,no speeding and braking,no jackrabbit starts nothing. I read somewhere that front wheel drives wear out tyres faster. Is that true? Especially during turining and braking? My tyres keep fading like this I will be in trouble..tyres are expensive to change so fast. I know the first time I didnt check tyre pressure but ever since I changed I check pressure every alternate week on cold tyres. What am I doign wrong?what more could I do? Please advise.

Cornering briskly is really hard on front tyres. Wears them down on the outside shoulder.

Maybe the car needs an alignment?

I agree,

also listing which tires you are using might also help.

2 sets of front tyres.. and under 30,000 KM's. I don't believe it.

it also depends on the type of tires... state your brand and model.

in Canada, we use 2 sets of tires (winter and summers), so they SEEM to last longer. but i'm pretty sure i do about 30k with 1 set.

For the first set you had to replace, I think it is reasonable and has something to do with the type of tyres Toyota Australia puts on their cars. I had to replace all four tyres within the first 35,000km. Family/friends who have bought Toyota's here have also had the same problem.

As for the second set, I think you've potentially been ripped by your tyre place. Who did you go, and what type did they put on your car?

I had some epic toe in for a while. They chewed up a new set of tires in 5 months.
