The dangers of overfilling your gas tank
I often continue to fill my tank after the first click… just to round off the number. This article gives me pause for thought.

I got a chuckle out of that.
I remember hearing something a long time ago about it not being good for the car to fill past the first click, so that's what I've done with my Yaris. Before it, I would "top off" my tanks. At the end of the day, I don't think the added drops are worth any risk, so I'd play it safe rather than sorry. Stopping for gas a couple miles early just isn't worth it, imho. |

I put 1-2L of fuel easily after the first click and it's not nearly reaching the tube.

I typically stop filling after I hear a second click. No problems yet, but I'll consider stopping after the first click from now on.

Toyota Yaris fuel tank fill shut off click EVAP system charcoal canister codes
If it isn't an errant half-fill click off, something happened--some tank pressure increase--at the first click shut off. Manual says to stop there. Why go against manual recommendation? There's a complicated EVAP system that wants vapor space in the top of the tank.

I'm pretty sure I fuel-logged - and as a result destroyed - my evap canister on my older Dodge Grand Caravan due to repeated overfilling. I now always stop at the click. I think I saw somewhere that a charcoal canister for the Yaris is north of $600.00 USD. Yikes!

I did find one for my 2008. The OEM is actually about $500.00 CAD. But, from a local dealer??? Not cheap!

And that's for the part alone, not labor. I'm no mechanic, so I would have to pay for labor on top of the part cost. And that would definitely not be cheap! I'm glad this thread was started. I will definitely stop topping off. No damage has happened thus far. But it's clearly a silly gamble with no real benefit.
