Major issues...

After 40 years as a car owner, I have to ask: Are cars not made like they were back in the old days?!

I've had a Triumph Herald 1200, Mazda 1300, Mitsubishi Colt and now a Yaris.

During one year I have had the following problems with my Yaris:
1st Accelerator can get stuck
2nd Wheel nuts are rusting
3rd Rear brakes are rusting solid
4th Rear brakes subsequently howl and can not be repaired

Couldn’t one just get a good old VW that runs and runs without any problems?!?

hmmm.. the vast majority of us on this board are not having any (of those) problems with the Yaris.

but you're right, they don't make cars (or anything for that matter) like they used to. Also, nowadays, you can actually get further than 15 miles with a gallon of gas.

1. Did it stuck? Thats very rare.
2. Erm ... are you serious?
3. & 4. Disc Brake? Common issue since they are kind of oversized. Use the handbrake if safe to "polish" and "clean" the rear disc brakes. I do this from time to time. If the brakes make weird sounds check the pads and sand the edges of the pads. Re-Install with ceramic based antiseize on the back (!!) of the pads.

Drum brake? Sand the drum and paint it with heat-resistant paint. Get the inner side of the drum cleaned with brake cleaner.

First of all, I'm not a troll :) Secondly, thanks for all of your replies!

@Kongo-Otto: Yes, I am serious. Why does it seem so unlikely?

I wrote this post because I think that we also need to know about negative things in order to get a more nuanced picture of the car. And I do seem to have some major issues with my Yaris. I'm really not exaggerating.

I know that cars are more secure today and are more technically "complex" whereas cars were "better" in the old days because e.g. security was a non existent issue hence with a little load and speed of 80 km/h, they drove like a sailboat!

Welcome to the forums then.

It seemed like your issues were a bit overstated but Kongo-Otto makes a good point, not all Yarii are made the same nor are they all in the US.

No, they are made better! Most of the cars from the 60s and 70s weren't made to last past 60K miles; you can easily double or even triple that with your Yaris.

Secondly, I am not sure about The Netherlands but I lived in Belgium and I recall them salting the roads a lot during the winter. If that's the case in your country, you need to be especially careful to clean your car as much as possible as that is probably the reason for your corrosion issues.

Lastly, as a previous owner of several VWs, they are great cars but the last thing I would brag about them would be that they never have any problems! Mine were very dependable and a joy to drive, but they did require a lot of maintenance! I'd still own one, but in the long run I expect the Yaris to be a lot cheaper to own and operate!

Did you own a car then? My 1974 beetle went a total of 250k miles in eight years. The first ting to go bad was a joint in the wiper arm system at 80k miles. Cost $3 to fix it. The engine was rebuilt once. Everything else including the brake drums went the distance.
The beetle was a primative car by todays standards. I would take a new one of those over a Yaris in a heartbeat.

These trolls are getting really sickening.

Problems with the Yaris are virtually nonexistent. And today's cars are built 10 times more reliable then they were before 10 years ago.

Double or triple 60k is a big understatement. Even a Chrysler product (among the worst quality cars) can go 200,000+ miles. A Yaris can go over 500,000 miles. We've already seen one go well past 400k with only one minor repair.

What we need is a big ol' bucket of industrial strength Troll-Be-Gone. The mods could have more fun playing with that instead of worring about deleting my posts!

If this were true, then i would suggest you remove your car from your ocean based parking space. I would also suggest that you are full of crap, since there have been no reports of a stuck accelerator on a Yaris... maybe you should troll the prius forums?

of course they are not perfect, but rusting to ruin within a year sounds like bs and the whole stuck pedal thing never happened to any Yari. Yari were not even recalled for it. The whole thing sounds highly improbable.

You guys need to learn that there is something else than the US. That is not meaned as an offense! Of course the Yaris in Europe was affected by the recall because TMMF uses CTS pedals and NOT Denso pedals like your Yaris from Toyota Japan. And there have been a few reported issues about stuck pedals (but no accidents).

I don't think a rusty wheel nut is some kind of "major problem". That's what i wanted to say. The brake issues are very common, especially with the rear disc brakes (i still don't know if you have discs or drums in the rear) and i told you how to get rid of it.
