4th Rear brakes subsequently howl and can not be repaired

Couldn’t one just get a good old VW that runs and runs without any problems?!?
No, they are made better! Most of the cars from the 60s and 70s weren't made to last past 60K miles; you can easily double or even triple that with your Yaris.

Secondly, I am not sure about The Netherlands but I lived in Belgium and I recall them salting the roads a lot during the winter. If that's the case in your country, you need to be especially careful to clean your car as much as possible as that is probably the reason for your corrosion issues.

Lastly, as a previous owner of several VWs, they are great cars but the last thing I would brag about them would be that they never have any problems! Mine were very dependable and a joy to drive, but they did require a lot of maintenance! I'd still own one, but in the long run I expect the Yaris to be a lot cheaper to own and operate!
