Anyone try a horn off of an old Ford or GM?

Wanting a louder horn, but I don't want to spend the $$$ for a Hella or anything like that. I've had the cheaper air horns and they're too high pitched for me.

Anyone try an old american horn like from a lincoln, buick, ford, etc? Should be total plug and play and much deeper/louder than stock. Should also only be a couple of bucks from a salvage yard.

I bought one of these JDM Toyota horns:

http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/sho...ght=lexus+horn

It was a true plug-n-play since the connectors are even correct Toyota-spec. I forgot the price ($70?) but I like the sound and ease so it was worth it to me. Just find a dual horn Toyota in the junkyard. Also, be sure the horn you get doesn't suck more juice than the car is set up for.

It is fun watching the look of shock when people don't expect such a loud blat from such a tiny car.

edit:
Wow, they got pricey...

I had some cheap Harbor Freight air horns on my Miata, those were plenty loud, but kinda high pitched. I'm thinking more along the lines of something that sounds like an old V8 car or newer big SUV.

I put a set of Stebel TM80 horns on my Yaris and they sound great. I paid $23 shipped from eBay.

Here's what they sound like:

OK - I know what you mean now. In a worst case, to install one of another vehicle, you might have to clip the Yaris OEM connector and crimp on an appropriately sized female spade terminal.

I did have a BMW MC in the early 2000s, I remember the horn, you want this tone.

like I said, think of the horn on an old Lincoln Town Car or a Chevrolet Suburban or something like that.

Had an Aooogah horn on a '67 Spitfire back in the 80s. That got some looks.

To tell you the truth, Canadians are so damn polite, I couldn't tell you what the type of horn you are looking to install actually sounds like.

I kept the stock horn and bought a low-tone (F note) Freeway Blaster from Advanced Auto Parts for less than $20. The 2 together are plenty loud and have a unique sound. The one that's a "snail" shaped is the one to get...as it's louder than the flat disc type.

Here's a pic ---> http://www.amazon.com/FIAMM-72112-Fr.../dp/B000DINKPQ

You are right .. we just use our finger.

But I did have to use my horn today . . stopped for a pedestrian (yes somedays I actually do that) on a downtown street and some ******* on his cell phone just about mowed her down as she was crossing. I had to honk at her to get her to stop crossing the street as it was obvious that he wasn't stopping.
I gave him the dirty look .. and the ole German "what the **** are you doing ?" salute. I still don't think he realized what he just about did.

My grandfather loved trains almost as much as he loved driving. The last two Lincolns that he had (one at a time) were fitted with aftermarket horns that were made to sound just like a Southern Pacific locomotive.

Here is another of the Magnum 80. I bought mine with Scott's suggestion and let me tell ya, for roughly 30 bucks you can't go wrong with how much better folks notice you:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvLQsXPDNkU

Not really sure if has to do with the fact that Scott's video is in a rage as opposed to being outside for video, but you can clearly hear that the TM80 is not a high pitch. I have had mine compared to a BMW horn by some folks.

I fitted a couple of Wolo horns this afternoon. O'reilly Auto Parts carries them in high and low tone. Together they seem to put out some noise. I tried recording it but under my carport the stock one sounded louder in the recording even though in person the two Wolos sound louder.

The two Wolos were $10 each, so $20 for two units.

I'd guess that they're too loud, causing the mic input to clip. I went with a pair of FIAMM snails from NAPA--one high, one low--and it's a nice improvement. That said, I had to wire in a separate power lead, relay and fuse from the battery because of the increased amperage draw. The advantage of the paired kits like Hela Supertones is that they're made from a pair of 6V horns (motorcycle?) so they can be run in series to reduce amp draw and don't require extra wiring.

No mic clipping, I'm using a studio recorder and had manually set the input level.

Still not 100% sure about the sound. They sound sort of "out of tune" or something. Might remove the high tone one and put the stock back in. That way I'd basically have the stock one with some extra low noise thrown in.

The county road and bridge crew recently had left a newer Cat road grader overnight on my property, this saves them going all the way down the mt to their yard, and is better then just leaving it on the road. As a friend of mine is one of the county grader operators, and I like heavy equipment also, when I was taking a sunset hike with the dog I climbed into the cab and checked it out.

Amazingly complex, Two joysticks with all kinds of buttons and functions, like something out of a jet fighter. And, a button labeled HORN. I, of course, pushed it and about fell out of the cab I was laughing so hard. It had a horn that sounded like it should be in the Yaris, I mean the Yaris's actual horn is 10 times more macho sounding then the horn it had! I can't wait to give my operator friend a hard time about that. My Dodge diesel one ton also has a wimpy horn, go figure.
