This is just a reminder :(

On my way home today, I just happened to be right on the other side of the road when a large car coming through the other way hit a pedestrian who was, I believe, jay walking.

The pedestrian probably thinks she had the right of way and could just cross the street because she felt like it (people always do that in my neighborhood, pedestrians and bikes alike both pretty much cross right in front of cars whenever they feel like it, just because they think it's their God given right I guess ).

The black car didn't see that pedestrian obviously and just knocked her right down on the ground. There was a loud noise, a scream and it was all over in a fraction of a second. 2 people now are wishing they hadn't gotten out of bed today :(

Fortunately, there was a fire truck following the black car and they were able to intervene right away, secure the scene, administer first aid, etc. The driver of the black car appeared to have a bloody nose (probably knocked her face on the wheel while hitting the breaks?) and the pedestrian was alive and appeared somewhat OK right now but they imobilized her, cut her clothes open to put stuff on her body so she wouldn't move, and there she was on the ground with her eyes wide open and both of them were scared to death.

I'm telling you this because we can never be too careful behind the wheel (or crossing the street, apparently). We get lax behind the wheel, turn around to pick up something, or tell the kids to shut up, or pick up the phone, or get our eyes off the road to change the radio stations, or whatever... I know I'm guilty of looking at my GPS and the thing isn't located in an ideal spot so I clearly take my eyes off the road each time I look at it.

I am so very thankful I wasn't the one driving the black car because it could have been me. It really can happen to anyone.

Sorry about the downer post, guys Just wanted to remind you all to be careful, shit does happen and let's keep our eyes peeled on the road.

Thank you for posting this.
I really think it's important to keep stuff like this in the back of your
Mind when you're out there on the road.

It's a downer but it's still good information for any driver to think about. Everyone needs to be alert and ready to respond in changing situations. Thinking ahead seems to be the key these days.

The first day in my Yaris I was a witness to a rear end accident. One vehicle forced it's way across two lanes of traffic to make a left turn all in about 75 feet. The driver in front of me seemed a little upset with the lane changer so her attention wasn't on the road in front of her, she was giving the lane changer 'the look'. Traffic came to a standstill in front of her and she slammed the car in front of her. All low speed and nobody was seriously injured but it could have been much worse.

Jaywalking happens all the time around here, as is the case with most college campuses that are intersected by city roads.

Basically, don't run over someone and don't get yourself run over.

i ride a motorcycle as many miles as i drive a car in a year (almost) and it has changed everything. i always considered myself a safer than most driver, but after a summer of many many motorcycle miles getting back behind the wheel is an eye opener. it's relaxing not to be on edge and 100% all the time, but i've still changed lots and lots of little things. even some of the safest drivers still accept the fact that they're wrapped in steel and air bags, and are willing to take unnecessary chances because of it.

You pretty much gotta have the attitude that everyone is trying to kill you...and do your best to prevent it from happening!

Wait, are you trying to imply that everyone on the planet is not out to murder me? I assure you they all want me dead.

so who's at fault? both parties responsible...basically the person driving the car is at fault always if you ask my opinion of those statements.

any way...dont be an idiot...look where you 're going and be aware of your surroundings...

um.....common sense. an object moving at high speeds has a hard time stopping...more-so with more momentum and weight behind it...so, STAY OUT OF IT'S WAY.

common sense? That's something that doesnt exist in America if you have been living here for a long period of time or have observed in various places..ie: retail stores, on the road, etc..

I always drive with my lights on, it helps alot and I get pulled out in front of less now. I can't stand jay walkers because if you hit them no matter what its probably going to be your fault. I also can't stand the people on bicyclesthey are supposed to obey the same laws as motor vehicles but most of them do not and run red lights and act like you are supposed to worship the ground they ride on. I actualy got T boned by a guy on a bicycle he was FLYING on the side of the road when it was a red light and I was making a right turn on red. Luckily he was ok and admitted he should have stopped.
