My $67 sound dampening / undercoating

I've been wanting to get rid of some of that road noise that tends to plague the Yaris, but I don't want to add a ton of weight to the car with sound deadening.

I think this might be my solution.
You think if I just do the wheel wells then it will make a difference? I probably won't be able to get to the underside of the car due to my lack of a lift.

Unsprung weight =/= dead weight. There will be a noticable difference on weight attached to parts of the car that directly handle the power vs weight somewhere else in the vehicle. That's why lighter wheels and tires are more noticable than removing the spare tire or a subwoofer.

But if you notice 50 lbs (which must be a hell of a hard hitting woofer), then more power to you. My butt dyno isn't that sensitive.

Scott, I'm thoroughly envious of your lift. And I may do the rubber brush on coating now. I've already done spray on bedliner and it made an appreciable difference, but I only did two coats on the wheel wells. I didn't do anything under the center of the car.

wow 50 lbs will slow you down guess mine must really be slow then but i cant hear anyone honking at me with the quitness i have in mine i will take the extra weight over road noise any day that is a clean under coat job i have thaught about doing that myself some day

not to hijack the thread, but all I can say is that when I went and did my LSRs I noticed a difference with certain things removed.

oh there is hours of work there not sure lost count that was the first layer i have 2 layers down and the roof is the same but i added dynamat foam layer also to make sure its nice and tight for the sound system i have in my lb :) never can go wrong with any sound deadening work to the yaris they need all you can give them

Holy crap, Penny. That's looks like a few hundred bucks in sound deadening. I've done truck bed liner on the spare tire floor but that's it. I really want to Dynamat the interior like that but time is a factor. I generally don't have enough days off lined up to tear stuff apart and lay it all down and put it back together.

That's the same stuff. The kit is more expensive, since it includes a roller, etc.

I didn't sand, but rather just cleaned very well using simple green and painted.

That undercoating looks do-able even for me. The road noise on grainy pavement is tiresome alright. When you get the stuff on you how do you get it off?

Ideally you don't get it on you. Acetone works somewhat for getting it off skin. If you don't slather it on too thick it won't drip.

It really doesn't come off, but bolts break loose without a problem.

Good to know. For everyday driving (unless going away on a trip), I'm going to remove mine. I have tire sealant and am paying extra for AAA plus coverage (longer free towing range). I've never needed either within my metro, but they'd be available if need be. Normally painless and transparent ways to increase MPG = all good in my book. I just thought (not based on more than a vague hunch really) removing it wouldn't make any difference. I trust your judgement. I don't think you would write this unless you had noticed a difference (even if it isn't much). Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I had to put the spare to use in a car.
