I'm with alhope34.

I think the highways should allow the cars to go as fast as safely possible. Granted speed kills, but you're probably more likely to get yourself killed while crossing the sidewalk on McCowan Rd then doing over 50+ on the 400 series while in-between cities (assuming you're a responsible driver and know how to handle the speeds). It sucks when you require 8hr to do a trip when your car can easily do it in 4hrs. If going fast was such a problem, why don't we freaking get rid of all the cars and go back to bicycles. (in which case, I'd have the fastest bicycle around and would be in awsome shape....I'm all for it)

While you make many good points, I drive the majority of the time between Markham rd and Mississauga Rd and see my fair share of people driving well over 100 km/h. If people had the common sense to use their signals, not pass on the right etc etc you could have autobahn conditions on some stretches of the 400 series highways, but I'm don't agree that you can safely assume people here could handle that kind of responsibility.

McCowan Rd , you got that right.

IMO, it's not going fast that's a problem, it's the inability for people to judge when it's appropriate and how to handle their vehicle at different speeds. People going even 1 km/h over the speed limit during rush hour on the 401 on the stretch I drive is unacceptable. I am a fairly good driver and confident in my abilities, but I still would never speed or drive too fast for the conditions of my commute because I do not trust the judgment and abilities of other drivers.

If people want to go 150 km/h or any speed which is too fast for the conditions and then want everyone else to accommodate their dangerous driving style, they're completely selfish, self centered and a danger to everyone. The sad thing is that drivers like this usually kill innocent passengers, pedestrians or drivers of other vehicles. Most accidents on our roads are not accidents, but purportrated by negligence and taking peoples vehicles away when they are breaking the speed limit by a minimum of 50% should be the least of anyones concerns if they truly are a responsible driver.

That would be sweet if the made the infrastructure for more people to ride their bikes. If it was safe I would ride my bike to work 52km each way.

All your points above are valid, but I think imposing an unrealistic speed limit is not the solution. It's not going to put a dent into the death toll. The suicidal/crazies and speed demons aren't going to care about the rules. Creating a situation on the highway that allows both fast drivers and slow drivers to coexist is the only good solution.

Enforcing an autobahn style of driving in our 400 series highway would be easy. Simply impounding the car for hogging the left lane or using the right lane to passing. Then we can get around to increasing the speed limits for fast flowing areas on the 400 series hwy (e.g Napanee area on 401) would be a good place to start. In the case of the 401, in the GTA area, speed limits should be lowered...too many cars and too many stupid drivers.

I agree. If they could enforce different speed limits for different lanes etc. Zero tolerance for passing on the right or going too slow in any lane for it's assigned limit.

If we had German style law enforcement and discipline here, I'd still be driving my BMW to work, as you could actually safely drive it to it's abilities under those conditions without fearing for your life at least once a day.
