McCowan Rd , you got that right.

IMO, it's not going fast that's a problem, it's the inability for people to judge when it's appropriate and how to handle their vehicle at different speeds. People going even 1 km/h over the speed limit during rush hour on the 401 on the stretch I drive is unacceptable. I am a fairly good driver and confident in my abilities, but I still would never speed or drive too fast for the conditions of my commute because I do not trust the judgment and abilities of other drivers.

If people want to go 150 km/h or any speed which is too fast for the conditions and then want everyone else to accommodate their dangerous driving style, they're completely selfish, self centered and a danger to everyone. The sad thing is that drivers like this usually kill innocent passengers, pedestrians or drivers of other vehicles. Most accidents on our roads are not accidents, but purportrated by negligence and taking peoples vehicles away when they are breaking the speed limit by a minimum of 50% should be the least of anyones concerns if they truly are a responsible driver.

That would be sweet if the made the infrastructure for more people to ride their bikes. If it was safe I would ride my bike to work 52km each way.
All your points above are valid, but I think imposing an unrealistic speed limit is not the solution. It's not going to put a dent into the death toll. The suicidal/crazies and speed demons aren't going to care about the rules. Creating a situation on the highway that allows both fast drivers and slow drivers to coexist is the only good solution.

Enforcing an autobahn style of driving in our 400 series highway would be easy. Simply impounding the car for hogging the left lane or using the right lane to passing. Then we can get around to increasing the speed limits for fast flowing areas on the 400 series hwy (e.g Napanee area on 401) would be a good place to start. In the case of the 401, in the GTA area, speed limits should be lowered...too many cars and too many stupid drivers.
