Between 2004 - 2008 I paid about $10,000 between two used cars, including repairs. BOTH of them ended up leaving me carless. I said to myself, "Well, if I'm going to be spending thousands, I might as well spend it on a new car!" Thus my Yaris was born.

Good luck with the car. Your expectations of gas mileage seem a little high, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

The only way you get the same mileage with these 2 vehicles is if they are both parked. Even when they are both parked though the total cost of ownership is much higher for the Nissan than the Toyota as the Yaris will not depreciate as badly.
Enjoy your car and if you like it and can afford it, the Nissan may have been a good choice for you, but don't fool yourself into justifying your decision to trade in a relatively new car during its peak time of depreciation for another new car; which you again get to enjoy peak devaluing of; by spreading misinformation. Be truthful and keep it at you wanted the Nissan, because that's the only reason you made this move. |

My first Yaris was MY first-ever new car, and I'm 54 now. Kids only know what they are taught, and some of us teach our kids right.

My kids drove used cars when they first started driving, some real beaters but they worked. Now at 28 and 30 they have bought new vehicles. One of them bought a Yaris sedan and the other one a Chevy pick up (Colorado). Now they have payments but the appreciate having something new. The one with the new Yaris wanted something good on gas and reliable..the yaris fit the bill and the other son that bought the pick up truck still drives a 1994 Honda Del Sol to work (120 miles round trip) and saves a bundle of money on gas.

I'm 39 and the Yaris HB is also my first NEW car purchase ever. I've had a few low-mileage and Honda Certified used vehicles over the years, in addition to a number of 100K+ mileage used vehicles. I agree that you don't need to take a big loan to have a reliable car, especially with the cars of the last 10 years. $2000 will buy you any number of great, reliable cars. While some people really do spend foolishly simply because they "can", I think more people - young and old - spend a lot because they fear breakdowns and repairs. Its amazing how few people attempt ANY repairs or maintenance on their own today. I recently bought a 92 Miata for $1100 that runs like a top, and will continue to do so for years. They are out there, but so are a lot of crap-mobiles. A "buyer's agent"for used cars could be a really useful and profitable vocation.
Back to the thread, I agree that the Sentra buyer is kidding themselves if they think the MPG's or purchase price are even close to the Yaris, but maybe they drastically overpaid for their Yaris too. When fully-loaded, I personally think the Yaris isn't terribly price-competitive with some other fine vehicles (FIT, Scion, Versa), but it is unmatched for price and quality in the base-models, where its only competition are the Hyundai and Kia offerings. Above $15K, there are several competitive choices, but I challenge anyone to show me anything besides the Versa in the $13K range that has a track record like a Toyota. Even Honda, which I have sworn-by for over a decade, doesn't offer a vehicle in that price range in the USDM anymore. Maybe Hyundai and Kia are starting to build great vehicles, but I'll hold out a bit longer before I decide that. I definitely know that the rental Hyundai 3-dr Yaris-look-alike I drove was noisy, poor-handling and uncomfortable by comparison. |

Enjoy your Sentra dude, and if you ever need help with car related info regarding Yaris or your Sentra, you know we're open arms to help you out on Yaris forums... Drive/move to wherever you feel happy...happiness is one thing that this recession or anything can take away from you, peace~ And jambo101, you shouldnt say most like Sailboat was pointing out. I'm one of the few that went out and bought my first actual owned car myself and making payments on time all while going to school. |

This must be a mistake you'll be back. But if not there is always a new Yaris owner to take your place good luck.
