how old are the kids? 3 can fit in the back if they are small enough, but odds are at some point you need something bigger.
I'd suggest a station wagon over any minivan or suv. There are some really fun ones out there.

he's going to need a 3rd row
vans are simply the best for 2 adults, 2 kids, and a baby. in my family currently there are 2 adults, a baby and a senior. we're wanting another baby, but if we do, we're pretty much going to have to get a van. all the non-vans w/ a 3rd row just suck for anyone sitting in the back.

Inasmuch as people on here will likely flinch at this recommendation, go look at the Honda Odyssey! We have a 2005 EX with the 255 HP 3.5L V-6 and it flies! Plus, leather seats, DVD player for the kids, and a smooth ride; you can beat it as an urban hauler. The back seat folds down easily, and the middle seats are not that hard to remove. Honestly, I could probably fit my Yaris hatch in there if I had to! Seriously, it is really versatile, and considering you'll be humping around a stroller and all the other baby gear, you need a vehicle with flexibility! I had a mid-sized wagon (a 1996 VW Passat) that I traded in for my Yaris, it was great but it didn't come close to the van in utility.
You'll get ~20 MPG city and ~25 highway, not bad considering the size and weight. It does have an "Eco" mode where half the cylinders shut down at certain cruising speeds, it helps save gas. Find one that is a few years old with low miles and you'll have a great deal, hopefully enough to where you can keep your Yaris as well. About the only downside is that there are millions of them out there...I've accidentally walked up to the wrong one at a Walmart parking lot (wondering why my remote wasn't working!). Cheers! M2 |

Does your wife have a car? Keep the Yaris for the commute and get the later model van for the kid hauler.

Irregardless of what your next vehicle is, try harder to convince your wife to ditch her Mustang seeing as how the gas budget (and insurance and maintenance) for that car would be higher than your Yaris. Plus a Mustang doesn't have four doors, so the Yaris comes in handy when having to give a kid or two a ride to anywhere at the last minute.
Yep, you sure said that just in the nick of time
