I think most people get the distinction.

It might be more insightful to simply redact the member's post with a line such as "Moderator deleted. Reason:..." and so forth for the reason. Both the offender and rest of community would, in my mind, benefit from the public enforcement and education. Works better than the existing silent big brother method, I feel.
