I wish I had more than a 10 option max for the poll.

I didn't include the Smart because, well, it's more of a novelty car that people have as a secondary car. I only had 10 options, so I went with practical choices that make better comparisons with the Yaris and what most people cross shop.

A rabbit as second choice? There is quite the difference between a yaris and a rabbit, isnt the latter 2.5L engine?

Scion TC or a Ford Mustang. But I needed a more fuel economic car.

Yes, the Fit would have been my other choice, and those two reasons worked against it. The only other car I looked at this time was the Nissan Versa, and for me it didn't come close to the Fit and the Yaris. Ironically, once the Yaris won out I ended up getting the sedan instead of the hatchback anyway.

You can get a fortwo Pure similarly equipped in the mid $12k. That would have been the price of mine with A/C and CD/stereo.

I was looking at the Cooper S and the Volvo C30 but then gas got stupid expensive. Then I looked at the Cobalt XFE and the Yaris. I could of gotten $2000 off the Cobalt because of a GM loyalty bonus, but the people at the Chevy dealers were jerks.

Sorry. Left it out because it's generally much pricier than the Yaris and the two usually don't compete for customers. Same reason I left out the Civic, Rabbit, Cobalt, Focus, ect... And again, the 10 option limit.

Looked at the Fit, nice car but too pricey for me. Thought about a Corolla, but the small price increase wasn't really worth it to me since it's not like I needed a larger car. I also liked the versatility of the hatchback on the Yaris and the Corolla just doesn't offer that anymore (Hey Toyota!!! Where's my updated hachi-roku!?). Thought about the xD but then it also cost a bit more than the Yaris and I can't get over the ridiculousness of the gauge cluster on that thing.

If I had to, I probably would have ended up with an xD.

well in the states its literally the same price. $12,000 give or take for either the yari or smart.

The only reason I went with the yaris over the smart was due to the yaris having better control at highway speeds, and the wierd shifting/transmission options on the smart turned me off too.

Also the Smart uses premium fuel. Not a good selling point in this category of vehicle.

From the list I chose the Fit (well, the new 09 ones specifically, I mean).

But honestly, the other true contendors I ruled out were mostly all the hatchbacks in the compact and sub-compact area:

Honda Fit
Nissan Versa
VW Rabbit
Mazda3 Sport
Subaru Impressive 2.5i
Hyundai Accent Hatch

I'm just a sucker for compact and subcompact hatchbacks! Think they are brilliant, hot and far more functional and interesting looking than sedans.

(Oh, and I'm liking w/ the all-new Corolla too, the only non-hatch on my could have been potential wishlist)
