Unhappy yaris 10 liftback transmission, gears...

So what do I use? which gear D 2, L? and for what driving (and driving speeds) is each suggested....

I READ THE MANUAL... IT IS A BIT UNCLEAR ON ALL OF THIS!

Keep it in D for all normal use. About the only time youd need to go to a lower gear is when going down a long grade and you want to keep from burning up the brakes. Then you go to the nest lower gear to keep speed under control. Not sure if the Yaris tranny , when in 2 starts out in second. I need to find that out. Because in real slick times,(SNOW,Ice, at a stop light etc) if it starts in second, it is so gutless it cant spin tires. Used that trick in other cars, not sure if this tranny does that , will report back.

D right is normal driving mode. D left is third gear, which you can put it in when passing on the freeway or on a long up hill grade. Using D right will give you the best fuel economy. They call your transmission and automatic because it is automatic and will select and shift the gears for you.

If you have to ask, then just put the shifter in D right and let the car do it's thing; it's a very intelligent little transmission.

Me three! This is the best little automatic tranny I've ever driven. Plus, I've found that it just keeps smoother the more miles I clock. It upshifts and downshifts flawlessly, and never needs to hunt for the proper gear... and if you're not afraid to use the accelerator, it's quick enough to get the job done.

manual tranny is the best :) you people are lazy to switch gears or what ? you are loosing a lot of fun with auto tranny.

just want to ask if you know why auto tranny is so popular in US what is behind this ?

I learned to drive by manual,I have owned several cars and trucks with stick
I like auto because it is more relaxing, stick has its place, if I was rich and
was looking for high performance sports car I would go stick for sure,
but for regular transportation no thanks, It has nothing to do about being lazy
or old , but convenience and comfort yes.
And by the way the Yaris has one of the best performing Autotrans that I have driven.

try sitting in stop and go traffic for 3 hours a day moving inches at a time with a manual. Trust me, it is not fun.

Not to mention now even the high performance manufacturers like Ferrari are introducing vehicles that only have a manual transmission.

Henry, driving in the US versus Europe is like night and day. For one, on average drivers here are not trained or drive as well as they do there. Also, for the most part auto designs in this country have always favored comfort over performance.

But automatic transmissions are becoming more common in Europe, as people there catch on to their benefits. They are easier to drive, especially for new drivers. Secondly, as stated they are much better in heavy traffic. Thirdly, technology such as paddle shifters has allowed drivers better control over when an auto shifts, thus allowing more "performance driving" that previously. Even my Yaris allows me to downshift to 3 or even 2 easily, although I only usually use it to keep the DFCO engaged longer. But if you ever find yourself in Texas, I'll be more than happy to show you how much "fun" an automatic transmission can be on the curvy roads of the Texas Hill Country!

As I always said, you can always shift an automatic transmission; but you'll never get a manual to shift automatically!

Cheers! M2

I've been driving a manual since 1974 and I wouldn't have it any other way. Although if I was in stop & go traffic every day I would probably think otherwise. I take country roads to work.

that is right that auto tranny is more comfortable but if you have it together with cruise control you are becoming useless in the car :D

how long does your driving school take ?
i was considering the MMT tranny but the acceleration is slower so I have bought 6 speed manual
