There isn't a torque measurement for a belt, but rather a deflection and a tension measurement. They point to check is half way between the alternator and the crank pulley.
Deflection: New belt 7.0 to 8.5 mm (0.28 to 0.33 in) Used belt 11 to 13 mm (0.43 to 0.51 in) Tension: New belt 539 to 637 N (55 to 65 kg, 121 to 143 ld) Used belt 245 to 392 N (25 to 40 kg, 55 to 88 ld)

when i had a loose belt it sounded like there was a pig being slaughtered under my hood. so idk, that doesn't sound so much like a loose belt to me. then again if CT says it does maybe you should listen to him.

I assume you have already checked to make sure that the belt isn't bottoming out in the groves on the pulleys, that there is not any debris in the pulley groves, and that the pulleys are aligned?

nope. haven't popped the hood at all. been too busy and it's cold.
figured I'd ask if this was normal before I started poking around. I used to be under a car 5 days a week swapping trannys, replacing front ends, etc... but these days I am not a big fan of doing work myself anymore, lol. |

hey guys, sorry it took me so long to reply to this topic, I've just been busy.
here is a wav file of the sound, about halfway through the idle drops and you can hear it even better. keep in mind that this was taken with the hood closed standing next to the car, not with the recorder in the engine bay. think it may be time for a new belt or at least a retension on this one? It doesn't do it when I first crank up in the morning but starts 2-3 minutes later (I'm guessing as the belt heats up it expands). Does the Yaris have automatic tensioners or is it something adjustable? Thanks. FILE http://www.filedropper.com/beltnoise |

i had a bad squeal initially. new belt fixed that. now...after about 10,000miles or so...it does a tiny squeak on start up. I looked at the belt, its looks worse then it should for its age. im going to tighten it up a tiny bit more the next time i get a chance.

I've been having this same noise. It only happens when I drive the car for a while, and it doesn't happen when you first start the car up.

Back to the audible vs. inaudible noise question...I believe inaudible would be that you cannot hear it over the ambient noise of the normal running of the engine; audible would be you can and seems to be what Mr. Slow is referring to. We expect noise, but when the standard deviation becomes too great, we hear the unexpected...thus, the audible.

the file in the earlier post is not normal. the filedropper link just goes to the main page, not to a file i can use.
i'd agree with CTScott. I have a full nst pulley set, and after tightening all the belts, i have zero extra noise that sounds anything like that. There is a chance the belt might be too tight as well, but that is a belt noise of some type.

Good video, helps figure out whether the issue is the tensioning or misalignment
I remember couple other videos recommending the same @water test@ to diagnose the weird noise. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSs75E9wdzk |
