Wife is sick of her Corolla.

My wife traded in her Yaris to get the mid range Corolla about 2 years ago. She now hates it, says it uses too much fuel, is hard to park and the steering is heavy. She's told me she wants the new Yaris! I think she's crazy, but I'm going to let you guys convince me that the current top of the range Yaris is a better car than the mid range Corolla with sunroof from 2 years ago.

Your input is appreciated.

Here in the US, many people find the Corolla to be a better value than the Yaris, but I think value is a very relative thing.

I purchased my first (and third) Yaris because of the phenomenal fuel economy. I could have gotten more car and perhaps a few more bells and whistles going with something else (like the Corolla), but for me it was 94% about the fuel consumption. The other 6% for me was that I am not a fan of sedans, as they all kind of look the same. The unique look of the Yaris was definitely a draw.

The new one is not quite as unique, as it looks like so many other hatchbacks now, but if I were in the market for a brand new one, I would likely still go that route, particularly knowing how bullet proof the 1NZ has been.

This is certainly how I feel about my engine......and the main reason I view the criticism of this engine with . Obviously some people have different priorities than I do re the engine in their vehicle.

Personally I don't like the corolla. The steering is definitely stiffer and more sluggish feeling than the yaris, and I always hit my head on the a-pillar of the corolla, whereas I don't have that problem with my Yaris.

Hey, Mad Dog, you are forgetting the Credo for Continued Existence: Happy Wife, Happy Life. Forget that at your own peril, just buy the new Yaris...

I don't remember how heavy the steering of the corolla is, (called Corolla Altis here), but yeah i always hit my head on the A-pillar of that car. All this time i thought it was just me.

Back to topic though, yes car manufacturers have put their A-game into their subcompacts since 2007ish . Even Honda Japan has ceased to produce the Civic in their country this year, due to the sales of their City/Fit eating the Civic's alive.

So i say, yes, it is better--especially for a lady who uses a vehicle for utility. As they said, too, happy wife=happy life.

I just brought my first Yaris - 2013 model in the Cherry Red and she Rocks !!!!
I had a bigger car (1995 Honda Accord) and sure, the accord had more grunt (power) but the Yaris sure can hold her own for the city and some M1 highway driving I do - and she is comfortable and economical. I actually prefer the shape of the new ones to the old ones and I was happy to see the speedo and things back behind the steering wheel. I never liked the arched speedo in the middle of the dash and had the new models had that, I would not have brought it. I think the new ones look sporty and the front for some reason reminds me of a V-Dub (VW) with the curvy nose. I am in YARIS LOVE !!!

and this is why I refused to be pushed into the Corolla.
The sales people pushed as hard as they could.
I see the Corolla as a gas eating, huge old soccer mom sedan.

The Corolla is only popular because they literally push that car on you.
People have the "Bigger, better, cheaper" mind frame.
I could of bought a Corolla for about $1,500 less than my Yaris.

I had to pull arms to get them to give up and just sell me the Yaris.
I don't regret it not one little bit either. I love my Pearl.

US sales comparison for June:

Corolla...26,458
Yaris...........747

Kinda crazy.

Doesn't mean the Corolla is better. It really just depends on individual wants and needs.

But clearly the vast majority of Americans naturally go with the bigger car.

One thing I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is moving the gauges away from the center. Some people disliked them in the center, but could it really have been that many? The standard Prius is still largely that way.

Most Dealers around here don't even have a single Yaris on the lot, that's what made it so hard for me to find one! I ended up buying mine from a friend who was switching to a Prius C, absolutely love my Yaris!! My Sister-In-Law just bought a '13 Corolla, but I bet if they'd still made the 4 door Yaris Sedan, she'd have gotten it instead.......

And that is the really funny thing there. I have always felt that the Yaris has more room inside to include the sedan over the modern Corollas.

Japanese built -US market

Both our Yaris and Scion xD were built in Japan, and that played a large part of our decision. Baseless decision? Maybe. Maybe not. But the new Corollas cant make that claim here.

We also have 2001 Corolla Which weve owned since new which has taken a lot of abuse (two sons...) and still runs well. Very well. Japanese built.

Have also owned 3 Tundras in our family, and frankly NOT the same Toyota experience as we are used to. Built in....the US. Sad to say.

I would never have brought my Yaris if the gauges were still in the centre - I thought that looked so ugly - I love it that they are back where they ought to be on the new models.

cannot comment on Prius - only my daughter said to me if I brought a Prius she would get the bus home instead - LOL -
the Taxis here are all Prius.
