You have to first drain the tranny fluid (or gear oil). Once that is done, the easiest way to remove the axle is to disconnect the strut from the steering knuckle and the strut support from the knuckle as well. Then you can pivot the knuckle enough to have clearance for pulling the axle out of the tranny.

Does that mean you don't have to remove the hub nut? I'm thinking that would greatly simplify my transmission swap. Also, I forgot to buy new hub nuts...
