I thought all cars made in the last 5-10 years had that. Either way, are you really prepared to shut off power steering and braking just to save a few litres of petrol? Not to mention that "coasting" doesn't last forever and the car slows down... Unless you mean taking the car down a hill where no throttle is required - in which case it would be crazy to lose half the safety features of the car by turning it off.

The Yaris is drive-by-wire. As such, with the engine off and the key in the Ignition II position you still have power steering. The vehicle's brake system also has enough vacuum to support a minimum of 4 brake touches (uses) before it starts to deplete the power assist. This means that performing a FAS (coasting in neutral with the engine off) in the Yaris is perfectly safe as long as you remember to re-engage the engine after a few friction brake uses in order to regenerate the vacuum. While "coasting doesn't last forever" neither does any other form of movement, so I'm not sure what your point is.

Again, if you still have forward momentum, you still have power brakes, you still have power steering and you still have airbags, etc., then exactly what safety do you think you give up by turning the engine off and then putting the ignition switch back to the Ignition II position for a coasting segment?

Preach that FAS crap on CleanMPG. No hard feelings, but seriously, there are some battles you hypermilers just won't win here. That is DEFINITELY one of them.

Besides, this is not an example of where using speed got you out of an unsafe situation. Instead you helped to create the unsafe situation and locked into a contest of egos with another driver, jeopardizing the safety of both of you in the process. I just chuckle when I hear about the mystical need for power to get out of bad spots. 99.999999% of the time the first thing any of us do when we sense trouble is hit the brake pedal, not the throttle. As such I'd say I'm doing just fine in my quest for companionship, and she says she feels safer driving with me than anyone else she's ever ridden with. I've never needed to. Outside of Hollywood movies things very rarely happen instantaneously... they just appear that way to some folks because they didn't see the warning signs ahead of time. If you pay attention to everything on and near the road, the weather conditions and what other people are doing, it's hard to be surprised.

Such is the power of defensive and anticipatory driving.

I hope Grandma doesn't pass out at the wheel behind you while you're rolling down a hill.

I was on the highway in lots of traffic, all going about 70--just about everyone was on the way to the same big outdoor show so lots of people were horsing around and not paying attention. All of a sudden we came up on traffic at a dead halt and hit the brakes. Dude behind me did not see what was going on in time...I heard his brakes squeal and as I looked in my mirror it was like everything was in super slo mo...I saw the smoke coming off his tires in two big slow swirls, just like a jet engine exhaust. Anyway... in that instant I HIT THE GAS and swerved left onto the shoulder; my friend turned around and watched as the guy plowed right into the back of the car that HAD been in front of me. The impact broke both his arms, poor bastard...he had them braced straight out on the wheel. In other words, if I had not been in gear my car would've been squashed flatter'n a pancake... |
