Question regarding replacing studs...

I am considering using a spacer in the rear and while searching, I was not able to come across an answer to my question. Is replacing the studs as easy as driving them out after taking off the face of the drum? OR...does one have to remove the pads, springs, pins etc....as well as the rear plate to drive out the studs and insert the new ones? I can't get my car on the lift as my other car is currently in the garage so...any insight would help.
