86 nissan pickup - worth $1k?

A friend of mine is selling a 86 Nissan hardbody pickup for $1k. However, the clutch appears to be stuck as you can shift gears as long as the truck is running, but if you push the clutch pedal it dies. Is it worth paying $1k for? How much do you think it would be to get running?

Gotta watch those. My buddy has one, and there are a number of problems, not the least of which is the drive shaft: the Ujoints aren't replaceable, you have to buy toe whole shaft. He rebuilt his to accept GM (I think) joints, for about the same price as a new shaft.

It also has problems with the hydraulic valve adjusters, and again they are expensive to replace. The speedo cable let fly, and there is a power thief built in that kills the battery if it is left for more than a week.

Is it handy? Oh, you bet it is. Is it tough? Yup. Good little truck, even if you have to spend some bux on it.

Took delivery today. It's at the transmission shop right now, they are supposed to call me with a quote later.

lol yeah the e-brake cable is broke, so I get to carry around some chocks like a boss until I find one. They are 60+ online so I've been calling local junk yards to see what I can get a used one for.

The Transmission shop says they'll have it going by Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning. $875 for parts/labor on replacing the clutch and machining the flywheel. I hear that's a bit on the high side, but with as much trouble as I have doing things that are supposed to take 30 mins to 1hr on the Yaris, I don't even want to attempt screwing around with a 4x4 transmission.

It's a shame that designs like this had to die. I hate that the USA seems to try so fervently to kill the small truck industry.

Picked it up during lunch and drove it around for a bit. Re-learning after however many years of driving an auto while in stop and go traffic was fun :P I only stalled once and barked it once as well, so that's not too bad for not even remembering the last time I drove a manual.

I had one of those, first vehicle I ever bought new. Changed the oil every 3k and drove it 140,000 miles with no major problems before I sold it.

Good find.
