Stranger things have happened... These are projects our company was involved with some years back when we produced FJ magazine (note the RACER magazine logo). Both were later turned into diecast cars.

Virtual racing is getting in the way of real racing... All of the Sony guys are tied up with GT5, so this weekends shootout has been pushed to December, with the final race date to be sometime in 2011.

Good news for us, now we have the car for the 2011 season for sure. Time to make it faster. :burnrubber:

It is a Type 2 Miata flare from Racing Lifestyle. I don't remember if they we M1 (90-97) or M2 (99-05) flares, but it was the narrowest set they had.

They seem to be going that way... As are a lot of the other manufacturers, Honda and Mazda are both finishing their micro racers right now - the Mazda2 at SEMA was a show car, the racecar was being caged last week. The Fit and 2 will both be making their track debut at the 25hrs of Thunderhill.:w00t:

I heard that Mazda was looking to have a Spec Mazda2 Series. The grey 2 with the cage that they showed was not an exercise.

I would really like to see a series where all the sub-compacts go against each other.

I heard that Mazda was looking to have a Spec Mazda2 Series. The grey 2 with the cage that they showed was not an exercise.

I would really like to see a series where all the sub-compacts go against each other.

The idea being floated around is a multi-make subcompact spec series. The proposal I got included the Mazda2, Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta and Toyota Yaris. The premise is a low cost spec series - spec in that all makes will source equivalent parts from the same manufacturer (tires, exhaust, suspension etc) - should make for tight "affordable" road racing.

By my estimation, based on the proposed rules, I would guess the cost to build is less than half of what our H Prod car cost. They will likely weigh 100lbs more, and have approx 25hp less than our current car, with the biggest difference being the suspension and wheel/tire setup. Needless to say our HP car does not fit in this class.

The gray 2 at SEMA was a proof of concept exercise, it is not built to the spec for the proposed series, and is not the car Mazda will be racing. The real racecar was not done in time for SEMA.

Hale Motorsports, an MX-5 Cup team, has built and raced a 2 in very close trim to the proposed series. We should see the factory built 2 and Fit both racing at Thunderhill in Dec.

Green light... Two more Yaris racecars are being built. Luckily for me I dodged the heavy lifting this time, I only had to spec the cars and order some parts. The assembly will be done in-house by Toyota Motorsports - they have one month to get both cars on track.

So the two like new (2008 with 506 miles, and 2009 with 128 miles) 3-door Yari are being dropped off for roll cage installation on Friday. From there back to Toyota for final assembly.

Good news for anyone interested in an SCCA legal roll cage/bar, the shop doing the cages is going to offer a kit once these are done.

Now the fun part... Ordering parts.

No, these are going to be sort of a middle of the road car - similar to the proposed subcompact spec series. But that is not the reason these are being built, these are for some media/PR stuff, this level of prep just made sense due to cost and quick turn around. Stockish drive-train, new suspension, sticky tires (not full slicks, Goodyear DOT Rs, like your Hoosiers), no interior, mostly just safety upgrades (race seats, harness, fire system, cage).

These could ea$ily be updated to H Prod spec at a later date.

I LOVE THAT CAGE.

Autopower did an awesome job. This was the first time we used them for a custom cage, we have used bolt-in stuff from them, but this was the first from scratch. They came in at a great price, and turned both cars out on time.

Best of all, they will now be offering a 4-point bolt-in kit, with optional bars that allow it to be converted to a full cage.

We did have to cut one corner... I wanted the dash bar under the dash, like we have in the HP car, but there were concerns about meeting the deadline because the dash had to be pulled to do it. In the end it does not matter, the stock gauges are not important on the track, and a tach will be mounted behind the wheel.

Announcement from the PRI show regarding spec micro car racing:

ORLANDO, Fla. (Dec. 9, 2010) – With the goal of providing close racing in affordable cars from a variety of manufacturers, Honda and Mazda jointly announce the formation of “B-Spec” Showroom Stock racing.
Honda Performance Development, the racing arm of American Honda Motor Co., Inc.; and MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development, the performance division of Mazda North American Operations, today unveiled their entries for the proposed new low-cost B-Spec, developed from the MAZDA2 and Honda Fit.* Both cars will be on display at the annual Performance Racing Industry trade show in front of 40,000 racing insiders.
*
B-Spec refers to all cars meeting a common set of rules that can be adopted by any race circuit or sanctioning organization. Together, Honda and Mazda solicited an independent body to develop a set of vehicle specifications that will be available for all to use – the motorsports equivalent of “freeware.”* The final rules should be ready for release within 60 days.
*
One of the fastest-growing segments of the automobile business, B-segment cars are among the most affordable, and enjoy great support from younger demographics. In addition to the MAZDA2 and the Honda Fit, the category includes the Chevrolet Aveo, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris.*
*
Two prototypes for the class – a MAZDASPEED-run MAZDA2 and a Honda Fit, prepared and entered by Team Honda Research-West – debuted at last weekend’s 25 Hours of Thunderhill season-ending NASA endurance racing contest in Willows, CA.
*
Designed to be an entry-level category, B-Spec cars will feature showroom stock racing cars utilizing stock engines and chassis, fitted with a competition roll cage, racing seat and other safety equipment; and manufacturer-approved suspension components, tires and wheels. Weight distribution will be used to balance performance among competing manufacturers.*
*
The manufacturers will use an independent third party to homologate competing cars and provide equalized specifications to any interested sanctioning bodies or race tracks.* A racer who builds a B-Spec car will be able to race the same car across multiple sanctioning bodies by simply changing the sanctioning-body decals.* Only homologated OEM models will be eligible within the rules.
*

There was some talk of that by the Toyota guys, but nothing firm. During the interview Taka (GT producer) said it takes six months start to finish to map a new car for the game.

The GT cars are working in the rain. Word from the track is Chris (GT producer) is the quickest, even taking down a Corvette in the rain. Like a true racer he even kept the dry racing tires in the wet.

Willow Springs is not nearly as fun in the rain. :frown: Due to massive amounts of rain we kept the play to a minimum and focused on work.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to lap in the GT cars, but we did get to do some acceleration comparisons, the stockish GT cars are so much slower than the HP car. With the slick track, and no proper rain tires for any of the cars, they had Philip and I do some of the driving for the video they were working on. We had to do some mock racing, and some very tight (the cars were within a foot) runs around the wet track behind a camera car at speed - it was more stressful than a real race.

The real struggle was the acceleration runs, even in 3rd gear the HP car just wanted to spin the tires. Slicks are not the best choice for a wet track.

At the end of the day the guys who ran the GT cars went out for a few laps in the HP car, one of them got out shaking.

All three cars are going to be run at the PlayStation GT5 media launch, and we have been kicking around the idea of taking the other two cars to an actual race. We will just have to see how 2011 plays out.

Off to the races... Heading out to Phoenix on Friday for the SCCA Double National at PIR. The Honda I was racing against last season is on the entry list, so it should be a good battle.

Built a new intake system to test. The car came with a K&N short ram system that had a built in velocity stack. I have never seen one before, and looking at the finish on the piece I believe it was a custom CNC piece from the cars previous life. I had been kicking around the idea of trying it, but the setup needed some fixing. The short ram lacked a breather input (the hose was laying loose in the engine compartment), and from what we have seen on the dyno the Yaris likes a long tube intake - makes better Tq.

So I ordered up some tubing, clamps and a breather filter so we could give it a go. This setup gives us about 6" more tube length than the off the shelf K&N system we were using. It also has a larger diameter filter, the velocity stack, and none of the baffles for the MAF.

We will try it this weekend, and next time we go in for a tune we will run them back to back on the dyno.

I still need to get some heat wrap for it.

What a cool event. Just got back from three days at the Streets of Willow with all three Yaris race cars. We were working on a RACER/Toyota/Sony video for the first two days, and spent the third with members of the media (SPIKE TV, Motor Trend, Modified Mag, Super Street, Playboy.com, WIRED and others) as they got to experience Sony GT5 and the GT Spec Yaris race cars we built with Toyota Motorsports.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_LvWc9cO2fpo/TUGwhiCFE2I/AAAAAAAAAO8/iSrIPyX-Z6M/s1152/2011-01-25_08-54-11_638.jpg

We were also fortunate enough to have all of the Joe Gibbs Racing crew on hand, Joey Logano, Joe, J.D. and Coy Gibbs, as well as MX riders Davi Millsaps and Justin Brayton. Logano, Millsaps and Brayton each set times in the GT cars for the media to try and beat.
Then the entire JGR crew took turns in the HP car for bragging rights... Logano crushed them, and he was just as quick on the GT5 game.

We were very happy to see the all three cars come back in one piece - with filming and all the media/VIP drives I think we put nearly 300 laps on the HP car.

Just to make things fair the JGR team did let me take one of the retired short track cars out for some laps.:burnrubber::drool:

I found the teaser for the event online. We shot this stuff when the guys from Sony were doing their drivers school. The on-track footage with the camera car was done with Philip (my boss) and I driving. There is also some in-car from when Chris and Taku (GT5 producers) took their first laps in the HP car, in the rain.

It is a federal (DOT) thing... All manufacturer program cars have an expiration date, when that time comes they get crushed. Many of these cars are preproduction, so the government does not want them in circulation.

I would image there is also some tax related issues, you crush an R&D/program car and maybe get a better deduction than you could sell it for. :iono:

We just had to send a bunch of pics, event results and a copy of the feature we ran on the car we built so it did not get crushed with this batch - I don't know if that is permanent, or just a stay of execution.

This one makes me want to cry, $200k+ gone in seconds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMNVVHI2ZNg

Just got back from a visit at the warehouse we like to call the Toy Box. Twelve show/program vehicles were on the list to get crushed, including the sedan I mentioned previously, so we did a walk around with the Toyota guys to check them all over.

The exciting part for us, we are getting a complete drive-train from a Yaris sedan: engine, trans, axles, brakes, front sub-frame with suspension. It will be great to have these spares. Now we can look at really pushing the motor.

I was able to make an appeal to save one car, at least for now... The 5 axis Yaris roadster was on the crusher list. I told them it is way to cool to crush - especially since it was at Willow Springs with us and I know it runs and drives - I told them it needs to be added to the museum collection. They took it off the crush list, and are going to evaluate adding it to the museum. Fingers crossed it survives.

Since the trans came out so easy - clearly I have had too much practice - I decided to tackle another project, a new steering column. The stock column has a lot of resistance, even with the motor removed, and it is very heavy. So it will be replaced with a splined shaft and couple of heim joints.

What a weekend... Freezing temps, burned up tires, contact, great racing.

After the mad thrash to get the OS Giken LSD installed we made it to Willow Springs for the SCCA Double National. Seven cars were registered in H Prod, but only five ran each day. Apparently the threat of nasty weather on Sat kept some of the topless cars away.

This was also our first race using the 13" Goodyear slick mounted on our new Jongbloed Racing wheels. This combo drops about 30lbs of unsprung and rotating mass from the car, and the tires are 3" smaller diameter, which really helps the gearing.

I got the Pole on Sat, and a great start in the race. The Yaris is a completely different animal with the new diff and tires. No more one-leggin coming off of turns, hit the gas and it just pulls. The car also no longer feels like it is going to tip over, thanks to the shorter tires, and the gearing advantage the tires give really makes it accelerate.

Unfortunately, as we thought might be the case the much shorter tire is more heat sensitive than the monster 15"s we were running. About midway in the race the front tires started to give up, and as the last few laps were winding down I could hardly keep it on the track. At the stripe Gary Wittman took the win in his Austin Healey Sprite, I held on for second.

I killed a brand new tire in one day.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_LvWc9cO2fpo/TWnCeCxftPI/AAAAAAAAASg/c4n7kMQJIJg/s800/2011-02-26_16-56-01_387.jpg

For the Sun race I changed to a harder compound Goodyear on the front of the car. Once again I qualified on the Pole. This turned into one of the best races I have had. Wittman and I swapped the lead something like eight times. At about half way Wittman and I entered Turn 1 side by side (a 90 degree left hand sweeper that is taken around 90mph) and made light contact, I got pushed a little wide and put two in the dirt. I kept my foot in it and stayed on him. Luckily the contact was mostly tire to tire, leaving him with a black stripe and me with a yellow sidewall.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_LvWc9cO2fpo/TWsdOcapvxI/AAAAAAAAAS8/1Rg_FwbShH8/s1152/2011-02-27_16-08-04_699.jpg

The harder compound tire stood up much better, and only started to fade at the very end - Goodyear still has one harder compound we can try next time. It was a very close race but Wittman had just a little more left than me at the end, after a 30 min race we were just over 1 sec apart at the finish, with Wittman first and me second.

Even though we did not win, we are very happy with the changes to the car, it certainly faster and way more comfortable to drive at the limit. This makes four poles, two wins and two seconds so far, and we are leading the Divisional points again.

This event marked the one year anniversary since our Yaris hit the track. In 2010 we lapped Willow Springs at a 1:41.7, now a 1:36.9. Progress.

Yeah, we still have the 15" setup on the car, they liked -.8. That is the inside of the tire. It seems like the 13"s will use a little less camber, but the outside of the tire was not far behind.

The tires are the Goodyear Eagle Sports Car Special, 20.0x9.5-13. They are cantilever slicks, so they are designed to work on small wheels, in this case a 7" wide wheel. They are bias ply, so they need very little -camber, .5 to 1 is the range for most cars.

The WAJ event at Mazda Raceway was a blast. Both of the GT cars ran non-stop all day (with the exception of a tire change). Even with cars like the Mercedes SLS, Roush Mustang, Evo, STi and a pile of BMWs the Yaris's were the busiest cars out there.

Being the only "race cars" on hand made them very unique. Even the journalist that initially ignored them were next in line after they got passed by one - oh the power of a set of race tires and proper brake pads.

Btw people at the track knew about Jason's HB and the other 2 HB he made. So keep the great job

*Note: I'm from P.R.*

Cool. When we were at Laguna Seca last week there was a crew from some South (or Central, I can't recall for certain) American online publication, they put cameras on the Yaris and did a segment on the car.

I guess being a "world car" actually has meaning when it comes to the Yaris.

I know the artwork for the shirts is around somewhere, because on occasion a few new shirts pop up like they did at the Club Sport Challenge, but I don't know who has it or if they will make more.

The GT cars were on Goodyear Eagle RS (DOT race tires) 205-50-15.

 After a week at the Toyota garage, and every combination of bucket and shims attempted, they were not able to replace our cams. Turns out the person who built our head, and reground the cam, did so in a fashion that prevents the stock cams from going back in (without pulling the head and doing more machine work) - even though he told me it would be a direct bolt-in, only requiring a shim/bucket change.

Is it part of the business model, do they all have to tell lies?:iono:

So we will run the car with our old setup this weekend. And now I am contemplating putting in the spare engine for the rest of the season.

I've been racing for 20 plus years, only girls I've gotten are 2 pissed off ex-wives, and a current wife thats still wondering what happened to her so called start-up money from my last car!!! Hard to make women understand racecar depreciation, where you spend $10,000 only to get $3,500 out of it when sold............

I would love to hit the 4th of July double national (if they have it this year), but the budget may not allow it.

Next up is Buttonwillow at the end of the month.

There are four pages talking about GT5 and the Yaris Club Sport Challenge - which used the other two Yaris race cars (#98 & #20), including details on the cars. There is no coverage of the HP car (#99), because we did not let the press play with it, only the guys from Toyota, JGR and Sony got to drive it. Lots of pics of all three.

So I decided to kill some time today by replacing the front subframe assembly - A arms, brakes, hubs etc. The cool thing I found is that the stock front bar on our hatch is 24mm (blue dot), and the one on our spare subframe (that came out of a sedan) is 23mm (purple dot). This smaller front bar should help the car rotate.

I'm curious to know how softening the front will help rotation. Can you explain it so us noobs get it?

A swaybar transfers grip to the opposite end of the car. When you put a big rear bar on you force weight to the front - this can usually be seen on a fwd car when the inside rear tire is in the air. The car weighs X, and now the other three tires are carrying this weight.
On a rwd car a big front bar can be used to try and lift the inside front, this forces weight to the rear, helping acceleration off of the corner.
Picking up a tire is the extreme, but even when this does not happen the bar is always trying to lift the inside tire.

Using a smaller front bar will help keep the inside front tire in contact with the road, and transfer less weight to the rear. The car thinks the rear bar is now bigger. And I have stiff enough springs that it still wont roll excessively.

A smaller front bar is a common mod on a stock class fwd car, it is the only bar you can change, and it really helps a car with an open diff put down power.

A small bar can hurt in slaloms, but you can get that back with more rebound in your shocks.
