Heading up to Buttonwillow this weekend for the final Double National road race of the season before the Runoffs. Looks like a good H Prod field, with five cars. Unfortunately Jamie could not make it, so the 2012 Yaris will sit this one out.

Well the race on Saturday did not go to plan, six laps into the race after stating on the pole I had half a lap on the rest of H Prod... Then a flat tire. DNF.

Sunday started first again, and cruised around just fast enough to win the race.

Being the last class of the day there was a lot of junk on the track, so easy to pick up something a kill a tire.

Following last weekends race we decided to make a few changes to the 99 car... While overall we have been extremely happy with it this year - the close-ratio gear set Micro Image found is awesome, and the Loyning's head with Jun cams is a big leap over our previous setup - but I just could not match the corner speed of the new 2012 car.

So calls were made, parts were ordered, and we will now be running a setup much closer to the one on the 2012. The 13" wheels are coming off, and we will move up to the taller and wider 15" Hoosier slick. To offset the new tires bigger circumference the trans had to come out and the the stock final drive was replaced with the xB gear set. Then the ride height goes down, and spring rates go up.

We think this is a step in the right direction, but its to late to turn back now. :eyebulge: I sure hope this is the last trans I pull this year.

I cant thank the guys at Cage Toyota (final drive set), Kaaz (gear swap), Eibach (springs), Hoosier (tires) and the Tire Rack (wheels) enough. I thought it would be impossible to do this in the short amount of time we had, but they all got me the stuff I needed in short order.

Time for some off season updates...

Less than thrilled with the other options we have used in the past, we got Porterfield to cut down a set of Hawk DTC-60 pads from a different application to fit the Yaris. So looking forward to trying these out at the Auto Club Speedway U.S. Majors Double National in a few weeks.

Also time for a steering wheel upgrade. The NRG unit is inexpensive, and works great, but with no power steering (and wide slicks, a diff and power) it is hard to grip the leather wheel for 40mins. Bought myself a late xmas present, a suede OMP wheel.

Also picked up a Longacre mirror. I don't really need the extra field of vision, but we found a cool side effect using this type of mirror... If you have your video camera mounted in the car the camera can pick up nearly everything going on behind you - picture in picture.

I think RPM related. Pegged the limiter (7300) a few times due to standing water on the track, 3rd gear wheel spin.

Decided to play with the rear toe settings on the Yaris... Based on what Bobby tried I decided to go with a smaller washer - I still wanted to maintain some rear toe in for high speed stability.

The car had 1/4" (total) toe in, so I started with a nice set of AN .032 washers. These were a perfect fit, did not even require any trimming to get around the hub. The surprise was these put me at an 1/8" (total) toe out. That was a much bigger swing than I expected.

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/964461_395046447275156_1383035261_o.jpg

So I went and picked up some sheet metal, 22ga and 26ga, to make some shims. The 22ga put the rear at 1/16" (total) toe out. The 26ga resulted in zero toe. I am going to give it a try with zero, but I may also pick up some 30ga material to make another set, which would hopefully let the car settle in with just a tiny bit of toe in. Something about 100mph in to the Kink at Road America or Turn 9 at Willow Springs that makes me think a little toe-in would be a good thing.

Once I have a thickness I like I am going to make a one-piece shim that covers both holes on the appropriate side of the hub.

Started the prep for the 2013 Runoffs this past weekend. Pulled out my engine and installed the old Bestwick one - which makes more power.

While draining all of the fluids I noticed the TRD thermostat in my engine had a tear in the internal seal. So far it had not been an issue, but it could have caused the unit to get stuck eventually, also could mean loose rubber bits floating around in the engine. The Cosworth unit in the other engine still looked like new, the size of the seal and the build quality look much better.

The 99 car is ready to race again... The good motor is in and tuned, alignment is set, new front fenders without flares are on. Next stop, Buttonwillow this weekend for a Cal Club SCCA Double Rational race weekend.

After this event last year I pulled the trans and changed the final drive, swapped all the 13" wheels for 15" wheels and made some suspension changes - I could not get my car on 13"s to go as fast as the Bestwick Yaris on 15"s. If all goes well this weekend I will only need a fresh set of tires and a car wash before the Runoffs.

I just wish it would not require so much work to remove the rears. The radial slicks are so much skinnier I no longer need them.

4.3 is in the car now. I could certainly use something closer to 4.1 for the 2015 Runoffs at Daytona. At least I have almost two years to find one.

Man was it hot at Buttonwillow, in the upper 90s both days, wearing a black drivers suit makes it absolutely brutal. :frown:

There were a total of four cars in HP, and about 23 in our run group. My only plan for this event was to make sure everything was good with the old Bestwick engine that I just installed, so I did not push it real hard, the engine ran like a champ. I took the HP win both days, putting the rest of the HP cars a lap down on Sunday, and ran .5sec faster than last year.

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/1186895_10151796207214350_358796327_n.jpg

On the list of things I should have done years ago... I have had a box full of sensors for my AiM MXL dash just collecting dust for the last three years. I picked up a Micro Image Oil Sandwich Adaptor, it has three 1/8" NPT ports, which allowed me to easily hook up my oil pressure and oil temp sensors.
This made it super easy to hook up, fit perfect, and no leaks. Oil pressure was solid throughout the race, and the highest oil temp I saw was 238f. Considering how hot it was, and we are spinning this engine to 7300rpm, I was happy to see the oil under 250f. Happy that I don't need to install an oil cooler, but in the future for these summer races I may switch from XP1 Driven Race Oil (5W-20) to XP3 (10W-30) just to give myself a little more cushion.

4-1 is better for torque up top vs a 4-2-1. A 4-2-1 is really difficult to get correct as there is a lot more information as it creates 2 torque curves.

Couple of updates...

After the Runoffs incident that killed the front of the car I put the bumper beams back in. But as the pair of them weighed 20lbs (without brackets or hardware) I just could not leave them alone. Thought about cutting some metal out of them, but then opted to go with some aluminum bar stock. The idea is not to be able to play bumper cars (which I find not having real bumpers it is easier to avoid), I just wanted something to support the plastic cover. These weigh about 2lbs.

I was flipping my rear tires, which had been in place since the Runoffs, and found a broken wheel. :frown: Not sure if it was from contact at the Runoffs, or the result of dipping a tire off the track at the Auto Club Speedway race in Jan.

That isn't going to happen. We printed percentage of improvement, that will have to do. Absolute numbers are pointless, dynos vary, so what I get on one dyno wont necessarily translate to another. However, regardless of the dyno being used, a percentage of change should stay relative.

Since the Runoffs will be this cars last race maybe we will find out just how durable it is.

All of our chassis have reached the age limit for non production/sales units, and will be crushed after the Runoffs. We knew that day would come sooner or later. Both the HP and BS car at this point are going to be two redesigns behind, so Toyota has no reason to keep them out there.

Not sure whats next... Take a break. Find a sedan chassis to put all the parts on (I just like a sedan better than a hatch). Or change to another car altogether. To soon to say for sure. :iono:

Got some good news from our friends at Toyota... They are going to let the #99 live for at least a few more months, we get to start the 2015 race season with it. Sounds like we can possibly continue to use it until Toyota's end of year, which comes in April.

Gives us lots of time to work out whats next...

I have mine custom cut. Did not like the characteristics of the Carbotech product, so we have www.porterfield-brakes.com cut a set of Hawk DTC-60 pads from another application down to size. Much easier to modulate, and a set will last all season.

So I went to the msx convention and scca banquet this weekend. I leaned a good bit and had fun talking to Andy Hollies after a tire panel where i was asking some questions about pros and cons on tire sizes. He gave me some great advice.

Well at the banquet this year, it was more academy award style system where nominees had videos of thier accomplishments. I found it very entertaining watching Loshak video for the president award where you, Jason, and Lawrence where fighting back and forth. The crowd loved it and i heard some chattering at a couple tables around me about how much of an underdog your yaris is.

Ill be there next year and future years to come. Good luck this year. Cant wait to see the new project unfold.

Just had our final race weekend in the Yaris, taking the pole, both race wins, and resetting the track record at Buttonwillow. Great way to send it off. So far this season: eight Majors wins, six poles, two track records, locked up the Western Conference championship. The new car will have a lot to live up to.

Interesting find... The bottom bar is the 23mm 2007ish sedan bar I have been using. Middle is the 24mm 2007 hatch bar. Top is the 24mm 2015 hatch bar, the kicker is the 2015 bar is tubular while the others are solid. This will drop unsprung weight, and due to a softer rate should free the car up and help put power down. Going to have to try it out.

The funny thing about torsion is that it's almost entirely carried by the outer diameter of the shaft, so the rate shouldn't be significantly softer. I've tried looking at Toyota parts sites for a 2015, but most don't carry anything newer than 2014.

I don't think there is enough material there to pull that off. If you want to dial preload out you only need an adjustable link on one side, so you can always split a pair. In my case the mount on the strut it adjustable.

Still trying to get data from Toyota. Typical rule of thumb (for equal OD) is a 20% change in stiffness, 40% change in weight.

Base rack (its actually the one out of the old car, which actually came out of a sedan). With the EPS removed I don't want to further increase steering effort, and for road racing the quicker rack really isn't necessary.

You can just unplug and remove the electric motor. We did that the first year because the system did not work when we got the old car. Steering effort is very heavy because you are still turning parts in the column, and the shaft itself is very heavy.

I know some people think its sporty to disable the EPS, but its only got to slow you down in Solo. Its also worth noting that a lot of the Prepared and Mod Solo guys are incorporating Toyota EPS into builds. Unless you are prepared to go all the way keep what you have.

Took the car out to Buttonwillow Raceway for a shake down, just as quick as the old car only more stable, making it easier to drive at the limit. Had planned to sign up for the track day portion of the event, but the tech crew got me a log book in time for qual so I entered the race.

Started on the pole for the entire group, and took the overall win, first time I have ever done that. Lowered the track record I sat for this configuration in 2013 by 3.5sec (the track has gotten faster since they repaved last year, so this was expected).

Very happy with the car, no hiccups whatsoever. :w00t:

Forgot to post much in the way of updates lately... After the Buttonwillow warm up the car went to Portland for the Rose Cup races. Jamie Bestwick qual second, and won the Friday race after Indycar vet turned H Production racer Parker Johnstone broke.

https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfa1/t31.0-8/11406352_10206429396121138_2828854677098651824_o.j pg

In qual for the Saturday race Bestwick got caught up in some oil from a blown up American Sedan Camaro, and found the tire wall in Turn 12. Toyota lined up a loaner car from a local dealer so we could make repairs, but we elected to call it with one win in the books and headed home. Sadly this meant I also missed the July 4th Majors race a few weeks later, but since I was already qualified for the Runoffs it did not matter.

https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xta1/v/t1.0-9/11535664_786631978116599_8280404559805874935_n.jpg ?oh=bc8c07a501ba5b4a1b09dbe8f4967802&oe=563E8AC0

We had to replace the hood, drivers fender, door, lights and bumper. We were able to get most of the parts from a 2014 prototype. We actually rebuilt the car as a 2014 so we could take Bestwick out testing.

Just picked up the 2015 bodywork yesterday, and we will be putting that on for the Runoffs at Daytona. I like the 2014 nose better.

We have also been working on a new engine for Daytona, fingers crossed its ready in time.

Just had the spare trans checked out, and the OS Giken LSD adjusted with a little hotter setup. The off the shelf setup has been pretty good, but they said they can dial in a touch more lock up since we are running such a sticky tire.

The head that is in the car now was built in 2010, but the bottom end was new in 2012. It did not get used in 2011 or 2013, so its still in good shape.

The spare we are rebuilding was all new in 2012, and has not been run since the end of that year. Now it is getting fitted with custom pistons, upgraded rods and better valve springs.

My Loyning head with Jun cams only had one season on it, so there was no reason to send it to the engine builder for a refresh. However, with the much higher RPM expectation it was time for a valve spring upgrade. BC springs and retainers in.

Finally got the spare trans opened up, looks worse than I expected. Drove fine, other than a slight clunk when going from 5th to 4th - never even a grind from 3rd to 4th, no hint there was an issue until I found synchro teeth in the axle seal. In addition to a wasted synchro there are some broken and burned up parts. The oil sprayer broke off and the shaft it supplied got a little hot. Ordering a few replacement parts, and coating stuff this time. Still, after three years of racing with nothing more than a fluid change, I can't complain.

Its really hard to miss the 3-4 shift. But after three years of use, and many guest drivers, I am sure it has been well used. I know guys that are having to rebuild much more costly trans every season, so I wont complain about getting three years out of this one.

Only asked because you said the downshift was getting bad but the upshift was fine.

I had the same problem with 4th on my 6 speed transmission I built years ago. But after having it out to swap in my new turbo engine I switched to royal purple and the notchy downshift to 4th has nearly completely cleared up.

Took the car out to Auto Club Speedway over the weekend for the SCCA U.S. Majors Tour. Took the win from the pole on Saturday, and knocked another tenth off the H Prod track record, now at a 1:59.302.

Sunday we thought it was going to stay dry enough to run full slicks, was just a slight sprinkle when we headed to grid, but it started to rain hard during the race. At one time I was leading the group overall, but it was not worth pushing that hard to so I backed off a bit. Took the win in HP and finished 3rd overall.

What determines how long you can use a chassis?

Jason@SportsCar

What determines how long you can use a chassis?

The Feds. A preproduction car can only be here for a limited number of years before it has to be shipped back to its country of origin or crushed. Standard is three years, you can get waivers that allow for two additional years. This chassis has been here since 2014, so we are already into a waiver to get the 2017 season out of it. And with changes on the way for 2018 no reason to keep this car on the books.

99% sure its a stock motor with a turbo tossed in for looks. From what I gather this was not supposed to be on there, could be the reason nearly every SEMA release has the hood down, and never makes mention of the turbo.

Very nice.

Too bad there was no mention of the guys who build the engine, or transmission, or the tuner.....they made it reliable for you

When RACER puts the interview together they control the content. Post race interview is the place for the other guys.

We were pleasantly surprised to see the 2015 get a stay of execution - it was supposed to get crushed at the end of the season, but I think the win at Indy helped convince some people to do a little paperwork and get us that last year on the fed waiver - so we will be racing the car at the 2018 Runoffs at Sonoma.

The 2018 race season just got underway with the Cal Club SCCA U.S. Majors Tour at Auto Club Speedway last weekend. The Yaris loves this track, started the weekend with the H Prod pole, won the qualifying race, as well as the feature race on Sunday. And reset the lap record in the process, dropping it from a 1:58.0 to a 1:57.9.

Bobby had his HP Yaris out there as well, he qualified 4th of 6 cars. I believe he was running 3rd during the qual race when his engine expired. :frown: Hopefully he will have a replacement engine up and running in time for Willow Springs in March.

 Is that an SCCA rule or ...? And is it against the rules to smuggle the vehicle out of state or country?!

No, that is a Toyota thing, they own the car. It's not a car that can be sold or titled, has to be sent back to country of origin or crushed no later than five years after it hits the ground here.

Nice driving Jason, I always enjoy watching your videos to prepare for events. I plant to hit this track in March with the Optima Challenge.

LOL. I normally leave supportive comments on videos I like, but there are some that I will call out for using click-bait titles when their content sucks.

But if people hate on race footage and that bothers you, just delete it right? Personally when I get hate comments, I just out-troll them until they are confused
