Hey Jason!

I don't know if you're aware, but that JDM TRD exhaust you sold to Garm back in 2012 is alive and well on my '08 hatch. Crazy story. To make a long story short though, when Garm had purchased it off you, I was stuck in the warehouse cleaning it... and admiring it. I was later told by Garm and Jeff that it was sold. I had spent what seemed to be an eternity talking about how rare it was to my wife and how how badly I wanted one (at the time, there were only 2 other known Yaris owners who had one. I had no idea that my wife had taken note of my ramblings and contacted Jeff at Micro Image who set up a crazy mission to keep the sale under wraps. I was later surprised at home on Valentines day with your muffler with a big red bow wrapped snugly around it. Garm had also purchased your race driven clutch which was ready to get slapped on at the time.

If you're ever selling any other goodies, let me know, I'll be more than glad to purchase your hand me downs (:

Took the old car out to Sonoma Raceway for the SCCA US Majors Tour. It was a huge event, with over 400 cars. Having never raced there before it was a great test for the Runoffs, which will be there in Oct. Went in to the event with no expectations, simply looking at it as a test day.

The weekend started a little rough... A vibration that showed up a Buttonwillow in April finally got bad enough I could identify it, for the first time in 8 years of racing these cars we had a CV go bad. Ended up having to cut qualifying short, just going out long enough to post a decent lap so we wouldn't push our luck. Got an axle from a local auto parts store in time to make the race.

Brutal hot on Saturday, and while I was having to manage my front tires the little British roadsters that were flying in qualifying were suffering even worse from the heat. I was able to get the win on Saturday.

On Sunday we had an ugly incident at the start when two Grand Touring Lite cars got together in Turn 2. It created a bit of a log jam, and next thing you know the top three H Prod cars are all piled together. Fortunately the Yaris can take a hit, I was able to restart after falling to last in the field, and work my way back up to take the win.

Learned a lot from our weekend, and have made some chassis changes that will make the car better for the Runoffs.

Prep for the 2018 Runoffs at Sonoma is almost done. Rather than building a new car for one race (the program ends this year) we decide to update the 2015. So all the applicable pieces from the 2018 were removed and it was sent to the crusher. The 2015 gets a facelift, and one last race - seemed wrong not to run the chassis that has brought us two Runoffs poles, a championship, and two second place finishes.

Happy to be going in the favorite, but its going to be a very challenging track to get it done on.

It was not an easy race, but I expected that since Brian Linn and I haven't been more than about a car length apart most every time we have raced the last few years.

We are done with the Yaris. Still very early talks, but looks promising for some type of racing program with a different Toyota product next year.

Just have to figure out whats next... Have tons of spares from the 2015 and 2018, so I could easily build a 2012-2018 to replace this one.

But I also like the sedan. Longer wheelbase, lower roof, and dirt cheap compared to a 2012+ hatch.

All the mechanical bits will fit either. :iono:

I ended up getting the 2ZR from ArmstrongRacing. The plan now is to make it an (uncompetitive) STL build and just do regional stuff with SCCA/NASA/GridLife, track days, etc. If you end up going with a sedan, I'd love to pick your brain on some chassis/interior prep.

It will pretty much be a carbon copy of the 2015, right down to the graphics since I am recycling the bodywork from the old car.

Jason@SportsCar

Sent the sedan down the road today. Was a nice car, only 81k miles, someone got a great commuter.

Now I just have to resist the urge to start tearing into the 2012 before spring.

Jason@SportsCar
11-20-2021, 06:44 PM
Not sure how I managed to let nearly a year go by without updating this...:iono:

In Jan 21' I started the 2015 build, aka H Prod Yaris 4.0. Really nothing new here, just a carbon copy of the last car, right down to the recycled bodywork - really the only parts used from the 218k donor car were the tub and the EPS. The plan was just to finish the car in time for the final Cal Club SCCA race of the season, which was supposed to take place at the new Buttonwillow track.

Stripping the well-used donor was a lot more work than the pristine new cars we had gotten from Toyota in the past, but the upside is this one is mine to keep, no crusher.

Phase 1, strip the car and send it down to Yawsport for a full cage.

I take it this was a rust free shell?

Jason@SportsCar

Phase 2, paint the interior and start pulling all of the factory running gear.

Jason@SportsCar
11-20-2021, 07:00 PM
Then it was time to install the rest of the safety gear and wrap up the interior. After winning our second Runoffs title in 2018 the SCCA raised our minimum race weight from 2019lbs to 2153lbs (post-race weight). With such a big weight hit I decided to try and retain the EPS. Most of the instructions I could find for stand-alone EPS require the early Yaris or Prius unit. Turns out you can in fact hot wire the 2012+ EPS, three-wire hookup, runs in failsafe mode. What a game-changer, should have put the EPS back in years ago. :burnrubber:

In addition to the EPS, I went to a full-size battery, retained the full bumper beams (previously these were removed or lighted), cut a lot less metal out of the tub, and still had to add ballast.

Jason@SportsCar
11-20-2021, 07:10 PM
The last step was installing all of the bodywork from the old racecar. Around this time I heard that the new Buttonwillow track was not going to be finished in 2021. So I took the opportunity to head up there in April and run an event way ahead of my planned completion date - after building so many of these they just kind of fall together.

It was an unseasonably warm weekend in April, and for the first time ever I overheated the soft compound Hoosier radial slicks. I believe this is largely due to the increased minimum weight and to some extent the EPS. When the car had manual steering it was really hard to overwork the front tires, with EPS you really have to take care not to stress the fronts. First race in the new car I was out front all but the last lap and a half, just couldn't hold off the much more nimble LBC. Sunday, race two, I decided to try and take it easy in the first half of the race, with the idea I would have better tires at the end, but I just couldn't keep the tires cool enough to challenge the LBC and finished 2nd again.

In 2022 I am going to play with a rear swaybar in an effort to take some load off of the front tires, if that doesn't do the trick I will move up to the medium compound slicks.

Jason@SportsCar
11-20-2021, 07:22 PM
Then came July... With the ability to work remotely for the foreseeable future we accelerated our California exit strategy by two years, sold our house, and moved the family to central Florida. Super excited that we will be able to sample so many new "to us" tracks on the east coast in the coming years.

I am eyeing the Homestead and Sebring SCCA Majors in January 22', and my wife is looking forward to getting to run her Spec Miata Daytona.

I take it this was a rust free shell?

Rust free, and no signs of any wrecks. It was a delivery car for a bank, used to run around documents, racking up a ton of miles in the process. Since it had so many miles, and I still had all of the parts from the last racecar, every piece of stock running gear/suspenion was tossed.
