Any Apple fans?

Never been a big Apple fan. I went from a C64 to an Amiga to PC's. The one thing Apple does better than most is form factor and marketing (edit - oops, that's actually two things ). As for cell phones/handhelds, I have been using Windows Mobile devices for eons that can do everything the iPhone can do and then some. Nothing about the iPhone was revolutionary except for the interface and even then it's more about the cool factor than it is about functionality. Just my 2 centavos.

What kind of mobile device do you use? Just curious. I want to upgrade my razr to something a bit more functional but keep going forth and back between the blackberry and something else. I liked the Google phone 1st gen. (I like tactile keyboards better) but the battery life s..cked.

By the way, I would agree with you that Apple's marketing / form factor is superior and of course the cool factor is undeniable. Going upstairs to the "genius bar" to get service on a device, though, can be a less than pleasant experience, at least here in the San Francisco Bay Area. :/

I'm currently using a Glofiish X650. I really don't keep up with the latest and greatest until I'm ready to buy a new one so I wouldn't be the one to ask for recommendations on a WiMo device. Though I hear good things about HTC devices.

I have used both Mac and PC computers over the years, and the Mac is definetely more suited to people who want a straightforward user interface and dont need anything fancy. Simple internet, email, and word processing applications. for those who use them for graphic, web, and program design, they are well suited because the operating system doesnt get bogged down by intruding applications, allowing all the power the computer is supposed to have be reflected in your running programs.

The PC is my system of choice, I can build it, upgrade it, configure it to my hearts desire, put whatever operating system I choose on it, multiple if I want. The very broad requirements of my job demand flexibility. I upgrade parts every six months or so, always keeping the system current.

So It really depends what you will use it for and the level of technical knowledge you have that will determine what is right for you.

I'm a programmer/IT guy by trade so PC's are pretty much the standard for me. As for home use, like you, I enjoy rolling my own. Haven't bought a pre-built since the early nineties.

I wanna say there is a quote somewhere from Steve Jobs about how any computer less than $500 was a pos and there was no way you could make a quality product for less.... which I'm assuming means no Apple netbook - boo but I probably wouldn't give up my acer aspire one for it anyway....

I almost disagree with you. I bought a first gen iPhone and straight out of the box, mine was defective. My bf's first gen iPhone had a portion of the screen die and BOTH of us (hardened PC users) had to get new iPhones.... I just thought it was weird that the ONE product we bought on TWO accounts were defective - coincidence??? I feel like Mac's give the illusion of quality, yes the materials are more expensive but they are all made in China and marked up just as much, mostly more than comparable PCs

I have several Mac-only/fan boys/cultists who to game and program. They each have a PC built especially for gaming and programming needs. Even they admit Macs are too expensive... the irony of this is that no matter what they say about their PCs, its always that they can't believe how easy it is to fix and cheaply buy replacement parts as needed...



OP its a difference of opinion with Apple and PC (or non Apple product). I really liked my iPhone (the one that actually worked ) and the UI was nice, we hacked both of our iPhones to run on Tmobile and they did the job flawlessly most of the time, but overall I can't recommend them to just anyone. Its not just the price, but the fact that I felt like I was personally insulting every Apple Fan boy when I had a complaint about my Apple product and that's not cool

A bad batch probably. I can't blame Apple, though. Same thing happens in the PC world. One year, we had to change all the motherboards on the DELL workstations (bad capacitors on all of them, a known defect at DELL since they automatically extended warranties on the motherboards because of that problem). Another year, they recalled the power supply cords of the laptops.

I am still replacing capacitors from that... grrr... on customers computers
also effected from that massive bad batch of caps were several models of gateway and some OEM boards.

It really depends what you do.... games? most games are available for Mac. Blizzard make their games for mac first.
Macs have gone beyond what they used to be. You don't NEED to have a separate computer (PC) to play games anymore.

Anyhow, the main problem with PC is the OS. The whole computer scene would be so beautiful without Windows. If Microsoft has never developed their own OS, who knows... we might all running AmigaOS by now. Motorola's PowerPC processors were very fast, but why did they not succeed like AMD and Intel ??


this world is very simple.. people always want more.. but always for less. Also, think about it, what if Microsoft made their own computers.. Windows OS would ONLY run on their computers... how different the computer world would be now?
