The PC is my system of choice, I can build it, upgrade it, configure it to my hearts desire, put whatever operating system I choose on it, multiple if I want. The very broad requirements of my job demand flexibility. I upgrade parts every six months or so, always keeping the system current.
So It really depends what you will use it for and the level of technical knowledge you have that will determine what is right for you.

Good stuff.
I'm a programmer/IT guy by trade so PC's are pretty much the standard for me. As for home use, like you, I enjoy rolling my own. Haven't bought a pre-built since the early nineties.
