Yup, unfortunately we will always have stupid people.

I think it comes down to most people believing that they will get away with the crime they are committing. And lets face it, we all get away with breaking petty everyday "crimes", whether that just means going 5 mph over the speed limit. If we lived under such a regime that would actually hook up our cars electronically to monitor speed, and if we passed the speed limit we'd get bills in the mail. Then I doubt many would speed at all.

If people believed that it was a 100% certainty that they'd get caught doing something illegal and have to face the penalty, then wow, we'd have a perfect society (assuming laws were legitimate). Unless the person felt so strongly about the crime that they felt it was worth spending the time in jail or even dying for.

Then all our cars would be linked together and we'd call it a "bus".

The key to preventing drunk driving is to increase the severity of punishment.

How often do you hear about people getting their 3rd, 4th, 5th, ect...drunk driving arrest/accident? All the time, right? How is it that they get that many chances to kill someone?

IMO, your FIRST offense should make your life suck for quite a while.
Jail for 3-6 months, no license for at least 2 years.

Your second offense should put you in jail for over 2 years, maybe 3. No license for 5-7 years.

Strike 3 should render you without a license for 10-15 years, including maybe 5 years in prison. Harsh, but well deserved for such stupidity and putting others lives at risk.

If these reasonable punishments were enacted, how many drunk drivers would you see?
Actually the only thing that would stop it is if the first offense you had your drivers license removed forever. Then anyone who did it once would not be able to do it again, and therefor would be off the road. The majority of dd are repeat offenders.

My point in the beginning was to emphasize how lopsided the laws are and how lopsided peoples' attitudes are toward 2 bad things...tobacco and alcohol. While tobacco may do damage to you long-term, alcohol (in the hands of idiots) can kill or hurt a busload of schoolchildren (as happened here in Kentucky a few years ago).

I don't have a problem with drinking. I drink myself. I just think it's stupid to try and rationalize and be in denial about all the beer ads that are splattered everywhere, making it seem like you can't be "cool" without it. The kids see it, but people would rather ban a video game that supposedly warps kids' minds instead of even taking a look at what beer ads might do. This whole country is in denial about lots of things, alcohol being only one.
There are a lot of stupid laws that we need to get rid off. Adding new stupid laws is not the solution.

Enforcement is needed here.Change the laws so they can only appeal once, and they must be put to death when convicted, not left alive 30 years. And jail needs to be made like it use to be, old school chain gains and hell on earth, not the cushy country club it is now. Prisoners have no rights, they should be treated like the slaves they are. Hard manual labor and being forced to do something at least to improve society.
