Larry Niven or Jerry Pournelle, they got together to write "Lucifer's Hammer". What an amazing look at the End of the World, even though it is a bit dated now, and an interesting introspective on the American Mind...

non-fiction I enjoy: Christopher Hitchens (RIP) Richard Dawkins Howard Zinn (RIP) have loads more books but those are the only authors I specifically go out looking for books from

Many and they do change over the years, but right now it's Richard Russo (who wrote Nobody's Fool, later made into a movie with Paul Newman). He wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning The Empire Falls.

+1 on chuck palahniuk, dude has a writing style like no other...
Also, I'm a huge fan of the Myst games, and the books by Rand and Robyn Miller are fantastic. Huge Edgar Allen Poe fan too.
