Poor MPG tried everything - need advice
Ok, my kid just got a 2008 3 door hatchback with 102K miles. I bought it for his older brother, four years ago and he handed it down recently. I am a maintenance fanatic and do everything old-school. Changed every fluid, filter (except the in-tank fuel filter), plugs, brakes, rotors, new tires, bulbs, etc., etc. Recently, I filled up the tank and noticed that it got 24.6 MPG. I asked the previous owner, my oldest boy, what he was getting and he said "never more than 300 miles from full to dead empty". Don't you just love hearing about a 4 year old problem?!?
So now I'm on a mission. So far, I have/am: Checked tire pressure Full alignment Checked for dragging brakes (IR pyrometer, free rolling) Cleaned MAF and throttle body Not running with AC on Using local/no-name fuel Not throwing any codes (per local parts store OBD2) Not heavy footed I believe that the injectors and both O2 sensors are original issue and I just ordered reman OEM Denso injectors and new Denso upstream and downstream sensors. What advice do you have and what might I be missing? Thanks in advance. |

Toyota Yaris fuel consumption effeciency mileage
How do you know that driving isn't "heavy footed" when you're not in the car?
Maybe trade cars and drive that Yaris for a tankfull or two? |

My oldest drives like my grandmother, so if there wasn't consistent results, I would say yes. Also, I 'm not giving my 17 year-old my BMW 335iX.

What are your expectations? From what you've said, the vehicle is tracking pretty close to my numbers and we probably have nearly the same environmental conditions. Given the extreme cold over the past week, I'd expect nothing better than 24.6 mpg.

Is there 'winter gas' where you are? Apparently mileage goes down on that stuff.
Exhaust leaks can also cause a bit of a drop. You didn't mention it but I assume it's covered in the general maintenance you did, air filter. Also if there's a lot of short trip city driving, I don't get too far off what you're getting for mileage. How's the terrain in your area? Hilly or flat? Any extra weight on board? Ie. Unnecessarily full trunk? Weight kills these cars.

Your lifetime average is consistent with what I usually see from tank to tank. Having said that, I probably have added weight over stock and do not drive like a grandma, so 24 MPG for a kid that drives like a grandma is a little suspect, imho.

I have also noticed decent drop in mileage when I'm carrying a lot of weight, or other people.

My advice, have the kid start maintaining meticulous fuel logs. Don't try chasing down causes for suspected bad f/e numbers in the middle of winter. This car absolutely hates the cold. Sent from my EML-L09 using Tapatalk

Winter I do about 24-25mpg. I don't care about fuel consumption anymore.

I mean there are no possible way I can do less than 7.5L/100km. Screw hypermiling. I almost never see highways anymore.

When I was younger and had a crappy job I cared very much, now not so much but I do keep track for curiosity and to make sure there aren't any significant drops that could point to an issue with the car.

According to torque, I'm averaging 40.8 mpg (imperial gallon) so about 34 mpg (US) on winter gas. This is about 75% highway driving. Neither I nor my wife are lead-footed. I expect an improvement in the summer.
