Hi, long time lurker here.
1st owner of a 2008 Yaris 4 door liftback with 160,000 km.
Finally time to look at having a bit more fun with it, checking out suspension upgrades and potentially a 2ZR-FE swap in the future +/- turbo. Previously had a 500hp LS1 RX7 but couldnt justify keeping that monster.

Hello YarisWorld!! I recently purchased a 2009 3dr base model 5speed in Jolt Yellow. Its such a fun car, I really am diggin' the no-nonsense feel of it. I've had several Scions, including first & second gen xBs, iQs & xDs, so I'm familiar with the Toyota brand already.

Being so light in weight, it takes just a few simple mods to double or even quadruple the fun. [emoji1]
I guess you already know it's very close to the ScionxD, and most add-ons are interchangeable.

I was actually just pokin' around on AutoTrader & Craigslist locally one Saturday morning a few weeks ago, & spied this guy at a dealership a good friend of mine works at. I have bought a car from him before, & this one looked to be in pretty reasonable shape. It has only 112K on, & I paid a tad over what Bluebook said, but it had a bunch of stuff done to it to assure its functionality before it hit the lot too. I found a stock spoiler kit already (paint matched even) & I'll put that on next sunny day I'm not too busy. I have a set of Tein S.tech springs en route now (had TRDs & Micro Image springs on my old xD), & all the lighting done to my liking (LEDs for all the interior lights, reverse & license plate, plus yellow city light bulbs, cuz I had them). Also polished the headlight lenses & put in a set of 4500K HIDs. I need to adjust the headlight level up slightly however, as the range isn't quite what I'm used to.

Well, the Yaris is cheaper to maintain, drive and insure, but I find my 3-series much more fun to drive and stable at highway speeds.

Hi guys, new to these parts. I recently got a 2012 Yaris YRS that was my wife's until she updated to a new Forester.
Not sure what to do in terms of mods. Money will be tighter than a fish's clacker....
I'm from Sydney, Australia. Not sure if there much of a scene for the humble Yaris... I am from a V8 background mostly, not used to working on 4 cylinders, but willing to have a crack because it is still a car 👍👍

Hi everyone,
Been active on ClubFrontier, but now being married I have taken on the maintenance of my wife's 07 sedan and the forum has been a big help with common issues (any excuse to buy new tools!). Next steps, changing the struts/shocks and just bought new LCA's.
Question: When jacking the engine/tranny for the LCA bolts, can i do this without loosening the bolts for the motor mounts? Or do I need to remove or loosen the motor mounts? If so, all of them? Lower only? 2/3?
Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Hi guys,
Just recently joined. I'll be starting a new job that requires a 100km/62mi daily commute and I'm thinking of getting a Yaris sometime later this year, as my current car is a 2008 Mazda MX5. Currently I work as a mechanic and only have a 26km/16mi daily commute, so I don't mind driving my car through Toronto winters.
While I had my eyes on a first-gen Honda Fit, a Yaris, and Hyundai Accents, I decided to favor the Yaris, just due to my experience of them being nearly problem-free as opposed to the others (ball joints, misc. front end work, etc). They're also the least expensive out of the other choices in initial purchase price, so that was a bonus.
Hope to learn a lot about these cars during my time here.
Thanks

Like with posting pictures, there may be a minimum post count you have to have before you're allowed to post a new topic. I'm not certain of that, but just guessing based on how posting pictures works. Try again when you get above 10 posts...

Hey Yaris enthusiasts,
i'm new to the world of Yaris and surprised about the huge following this car has i would have never imagined.
I own a 2006 Yaris 4 door hatchback in bayou blue metallic with the 2SZ-FE engine. It's my first car and i took it over from my grandmother in summer 2016 with only 9.890 kilometers.
Currently stock and fun to drive in the twisties, but it it's on steelies and high off the ground like a bus, which needs to change.
I want to have a compromise between style, race and daily abilities in the future. So i guess i'll go with lightweight 16'' wheels and some sort of sporty tire. Also not sure which coilovers or lowering spring i'm going to put on it. There are so much more options than i thought.
If you have any wheels and coilover recommendations feel free to hit me up.
Greeting from Germany.

Hey Guys,
I hail from a small island in the Caribbean called 'Montserrat', I am new to the Yaris World! I ordered a 2006 vitz rs hatchback 5 speed manual from japan and it arrived last week Thursday here in Montserrat.
I would be clearing it from customs tomorrow and i am excited, I have posted some pictures of the rims i am going to put on it in the "Rims Thread" on the forum. I am no newbie to cars as i have previously owned a 93 honda civic dx d16, 07 honda accord cd7 h22a vtec & previously a 94 integra gsr B20 vtec. I decided to switch it up a bit obviously in make of vehicle and also engine size however i am thrilled to be apart of this community! and i am hoping for years of thrill, reliability and all around fun out of my Vitz!
over the years my focus on building my vitz would mainly be about looks and sound! not interested per say in making it fast as one the reasons i bought it is for reliability and economic purposes (minimum fill ups at the gas station).
As i customize the car to suit my taste and give it my flavour best believe i would be posting pictures in the respective threads according to what i am doing!
big up to the YARIS WORLD & COMMUNITY!!

Howdy. Let me start off by saying this is not my car. My girlfriend needed an inexpensive vehicle after getting a job out of town. After some searching, we came across a 5 speed '07 Yaris w/180k kilometers for $2500. Price seemed too good to pass up, so we bought it. Naturally, the car is not without its flaws. They are as follows:
1) It's loud. There is an exhaust leak somewhere, possibly flex pipe
2) Clutch is starting to go. Car needs to be given some throttle before letting it out, otherwise it'll shutter and stall. This'll force the clutch to spin upon engagement, which probably isn't the best thing.
3) Dash is lit up like a Christmas tree. Currently seeing the ABS light and SRS light. Sometimes the battery light comes on and flashes, but it always holds its charge and the alternator is producing power just fine.
4) Left flasher doesn't work. You can turn the stalk to the right and it'll work, hazards also work fine on all corners, but we're getting nothing signaling left. Swapped the underdash relay, that was not the problem.
5) Body isn't perfect. To be fair, this is not the car's fault. My gf gets a new scuff or scratch every week. It doesn't bother her nearly as much as it bothers me, but I thought I'd mention it anyways.
So that's it really. Car is not a garage queen by any means, but I really would like to get it running right for her. Any help or guidance doing so will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, cheers.

Donut gasket between header and cat pipe is likely shot. I just replaced mine that's been leaking for the past 60k miles getting worse as time went and lemme tell you, that gasket was toast! It just fell apart.

Donut gasket was my 2nd guess. If it were up to me, I'd buy a DC header/downpipe to fix it, but she'd prefer to reduce the noise rather than increase it lol. Can you please link me the part?

I just went into AutoZone and told them what I needed they had 1 in stock lol. I'm boosting mine soonish so I went with a cheap no name header since my stock one wasn't looking too hot. As far as how loud the header makes the exhaust idk bc I have a full 2.5" stainless catback I had built. I noticed a slight increase in tone volume but not a lot when I added the header but my car is far from quiet. Thoughts on an Exedy OEM clutch kit (https://www.carid.com/exedy/oem-replacement-clutch-kit-mpn-tyk1504.html?singleid=7054400&url=1723510) or double the money and move up to a Spec Stage 1 or similar (car will most likely remain stock forever)?

Hi! :) My name is Tina. I am 50 year old hair stylist from SW FL and just purchased a 2015 Black Sand Yaris hatchback last night. I always wanted a car that's small and handles well, especially after trading in my beloved '95 Miata, "Cinderella". (sniff!!) She now lives in PA with a dentist that has her as a Spring/Summer garage queen, so I am happy she is living a very pampered second life as a classic car.
The car I had in the interim for only a year was a '04 Honda Civic coupe, because I needed something a little bigger and wanted a car that was a 5-speed. (I'm sorry...I don't drive automatic.) It got a little dinged up from going through Hurricane Irma. I just was not willing to put the $$ into it in order to keep it going while getting rid of the dings/dents/possible repaint. The thought of putting in a head gasket eventually and $pending money on a new tranny to fix the input shaft bearing issue was bothersome, both of which are costly weak spots in 7th gen Civics. The shaft bearing was beginning to make some noises. I hated the way the Civic handled and it always felt floaty in corners/bumps. Furthermore it had a squeaky belt that never got repaired properly. The tan interior was fugly. Good riddance. Friends don't let friends buy 7th gens.
I have seen and read so many negative reviews from "car people" about the Yaris outside of here and ignored every word. I discovered that each measly complaint is totally unwarranted. Car reviewers cannot be trusted and some of them just plain make me roll my eyes in disdain. Bottom line: The haters don't know what they are missing. This thing is a BLAST!!!I drove "Viking" home from Ft. Lauderdale on I-95 Southbound in very fast moving traffic at 10pm with constructions zones (I know....baptism by fire), and he did 80-85mph just fine, thankyouverymuch. I feel like I am a spoiled rotten, wealthy young Londoner buzzing down the side streets looking for a place to park in order to continue shopping/sip tea. I have always loved those really cool little European hatches, and now I have one.
As far as mods.... thinking about getting some red Sparco wheels from Tire Rack and a rear sway bar as well as a three point strut brace. Maybe a decent catback/exhaust. Not right away though...on down the line. The wheels will likely come first, because the stock wheel covers just don't do anything for me.
Sorry for the novel..thanks for reading! :D

Hello and welcome. Yep the Yaris is a great little car, don't mind the haters. I would recommend the TRD rear sway bar. It's a great mod for the car and we'll worth the money IMHO. The strut brace really doesn't do anything with this chassis as the struts are designed to "float'' . The brace will have nothing to brace against.
I like that you named your car. I have as well. I can only name cars that have a personality. And this one definitely does. Also find it interesting that your car is a boy. Mine is a girl. Maybe we're both crazy.

Back in my Miata days, naming a car was sort of a traditional thing, and this one just kind of shouted his moniker at me.
I am really digging the Sparco Trofeo wheels in red. [emoji16] Yeah....we are both crazy in a good way. [emoji854]

Hi all. I'm new here and ready to embarrass myself on the internet! I have a new-to-me '07 Yaris 4dr automatic hatchback in black after my trusty Crusty 99 Corolla's frame rusted through at just under 100k mi.
I've wanted a Yaris for a long time so I'm excited!
I'd really like to get it to sound a little more 'throaty' without doing anything major. Should I be looking at modifying the exhaust? Cold air intake? I'd like to be able to do the work myself - this is on a brutal budget.
Yaris709
10-10-2017, 08:54 PM
For a throaty sound I modified the airbox (removed the tube and drilled some holes throughout the bottom section of the airbox) and used a drop-in k&n air filter. It sounds pretty good!
Trampledunderfoot
10-10-2017, 09:37 PM
Do you still have proper air filtering with that modification?
DiCaprio

Do you still have proper air filtering with that modification?
You do still have proper air filtering since the air still needs to go trough the filter. Don't drill any holes into the airbox behind the filter!
The only difference is that with removing the tube your engine will probably suck in more hot air rather than cold air.

Hello. I am new to the forum and looking to purchase a Toyota Yaris 2007 five speed. It is owned by one owner and has 150,000 miles. The car is in really good shape and well-maintained. My question is with 150,000 miles on it now how many more can I expect these cars to go. I live in the country so my mileage that I will put on it would be mostly highway. Thank you in advance!

Hiya.
Picking up an '09 sedan this week and pretty excited about it. I bought a new xB in '06 for my wife, but not before test driving a Yaris hatchback. I really dug the Yaris, but knew it wouldn't be big enough for my wife and I (we haul a LOT of stuff). But somehow, I knew I'd be buying a Yaris someday. I had so much luck with that xB, when it came time to replace my reeeeeally tired Eclipse, I knew exactly what I'd get: a used first gen xB. Well, the '06 evidently needs a new tranny-insert astronomical dollar figure here- so it just didn't make sense to hang onto it because it just hit 200k. Love that car, but fear what would be next. So, I gave my wife my '04 and I specifically sought out a Yaris this past week.
Mine's Barcelona Red, and manual. Near as I can tell, the previous owner bought a base model and loaded it with options. Everything but alloy wheels. Just buying an S may have accomplished the same, but who am I to judge. Really looking forward to ownership.

Hi, everybody! Just bought my first Yaris; a 2012 LE, with 105,000 km. Stick shift & it even has a Tach. We already have a 2014 Rav4. 3 years ago, I bought my daughter a 2003 Echo for commuting to University. That car is so much better than my work car, a '02 Saturn SL2. Funny how an average car can become so aggravating after you drive a much better car. So I finally got rid of the Saturn. The seats & fuel economy in the Yaris are MUCH better than the Saturn. I just managed to program a new G key using this https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Auto-Remote-Key-Programmer-Maker-OBD2-For-96-15-Toyota-G-and-H-Chip-Scanner-QC/253401464196?hash=item3affe77d84:g:Ax4AAOSwhVxaBnR L
It took 8 trys, as the instructions aren't very clear. Saved me $100 though!

Dear Friends,
Toyota is a good car , but the service department or franchisee and people involved sucks and are pathetic.
They are just a rip off , initially got charged with a diagnostic fees of $160 at Newtown Toyota , Western Australia where they could not even diagnose the problem?
After returning and showing them the problem they took my Yaris 2007 make for further check ups and kept it with them for a fortnight, later issuing me another invoice for $320 and giving a report saying they found nothing except that the current battery is showing 306 COLD CRACKING AMPS & the car requires 430 CCA
Is this fair ???

Hi my daughter has a 2007 3dr hatchback with close to 200k the motor finally wore out ! It has the 1.5 w/automatic tranny front wheel drive.
My question is " I have found a 2016 yaris sedan 4dr that is wrecked on front drivers headlight, fender control arm, same motor same tranny are there any known technical difficulties when swapping a gen 3 motor n tranny into a gen 2 chassis ???? From what I can see so far looks pretty basic ! If anyone has done similar please advseme what to lookout for when doing this I.e. .... Harnes changes, different mount location/measurements accessorie location/placments, tranny/motor lineup ? Etc.. This would be very helpful to know and greatly appreciated so I can get this swap done efficiently.
Thanks in advance for any advice y'all might have for this novice mechanic.
P.s. not my first motor/tranny exchange but is my first front wheel drive !!!

What do you mean by the motor finally wore out? 200k is pretty low for a 1nz.
Short answer to your question is no, not the same car. I don't know of anyone that's swapped the mazda engine into the toyota chassis.

Hi all, new on here so thought it’d be rude not to introduce myself... :) I live in Ireland and I’ve had my ‘03 Yaris for over two years now, it’s worked more or less faultlessly so far.
Bought it as a run about to do the school run and suchlike, but I’ve come to really like its dependability and the 1-litre VVTi engine is surprisingly nippy I must say. In fact it has really won me over so planning on upgrading to a newer second gen model perhaps next year, a bit dependent on house purchase and such fun stuff.... Ideally I’ll be looking for a model with the 1.33 litre 74kW 1NR-FE engine and six speed manual gearbox, preferably the 3 door model. I think this engine was introduced in Europe in late 2008/early 2009.
Btw, is there an easy way to distinguish visually between the 1NR-FE engine and the two older 1.3 engines?

Hi all forum members!
I have 2 units of Yaris in my house.
2010 Yaris J M/T Black
2012 Yaris E A/T Black
However, I hate the manual one because the clutch is so tricky to use. My advice is, do not buy any Toyota with a 1NZ-FE 1.5L engine equipped with M/T gearbox.

I too have a second gen manual, and I will agree the car is tricky to drive if you are not used to it, but I would say it is due to the drive-by-wire throttle as opposed to anything wrong with the gearbox or clutch. With that said, once you get used to it, I think the manual is much more fun to drive because of the lack of power from the engine. You can get more out of the car by being able to control the gear selection.
Regardless I love the Yaris. These cars are great value!

I loved my 2015 SE Yaris hatchback with the 1NZ-FE 1.5L engine & 5-spd manual transmission (& now wish that I would have kept it instead of trading it in late 2019) - though Toyota did redesign/refine the clutch system with the 2015+ refresh. I have heard/read that the clutch in Yaris models before those was pretty dismal.

Yes, you are right! My brother who used that manual Yaris more often said so, he says once you get the right feel with the clutch and throttle combination, it's good to go, but wait until your car stopped at the steep road (like at mall entrance or some stop & go at crowded mountain road), you legs and hand really have to work hard to maintain your car position and keeping the engine from turned off because of slippy clutch

In Indonesia, the 2015 Yaris also still used the 1NZ engine but with completely redesigned and way more bigger body style (we called it Yaris "Lele" or Catfish). However, I also used to have the 2017 Yaris Heykers M/T (bought brand new in early 2018 with a big discount from local Toyota dealer since they have a lot of stock left because this model is not so popular due to its weird styling). This model came with newer 2NR-FE 1.5L engine (the same engine used on Toyota Sienta). Unfortunately, I have to sold this car earlier this year due to pandemic (I cannot afford to keep 3 Yarises at once, the annual road tax is too expensive to pay), honestly, the clutch in this car is more comfortable compared to my old Yaris with 1NZ-FE. In my opinion, it just feels more normal.

What did they change? I have a '14 and the clutch is super annoying. Especially when its cold, its reeeeally grabby and likes to shudder which makes smooth driving difficult especially with the zombie-like throttle response until it warms up from use.

Looking to buy a 3dr manual hatch as a daily driver. Plan would be modest lowering, TRD sway bar, 16x7 Rotas shod with sticky rubber, and an audio upgrade.
Cheers!

Welcome mate!
You'll struggle to find a TRD sway bar here in Aus. It will be easier to buy the NCP91 whiteline bar and trim one of the mounting blocks to ensure 100% clearance of the fuel tank.

New here, so here's a pic of my Yaris. 07 2 door hatchback that I got this past December. It was my dad's purchased new I got it after he passed. I did a few minor mechanical repairs as it only has 130k on it. My son and myself installed the D2 air ride and tinted the windows. More mods to come so it will sit on pavement when he's aired out.

Hello all, new guy here. Bought a JDM 2003 Vitz RS Turbo about 6 months ago (it's the real TRD-thing, not a swap or anything), now starting the inevitable "build." I think maybe it's the southernmost-located one in the world (Punta Arenas, Chile). Tried to use the map thread/link, but no joy.
Anyway, just wanted to introduce the car and myself, and say that I need a lot of help and advice for this project, primarily about where to source parts (really difficult from here, as well as for the rarity of the model). Oh, I can check in on the Spanish side as well (Central and South America), if that's a good idea. Thanks for having this and keeping it going; it's already been very helpful when I was just a lurker.

Hi all, I picked up an old Yaris then wrecked it, that was over a year ago and am just now getting around to putting the poor thing back together. Am blown away by how big of a following this car has, I can relate though as most people would probably just scrap the car I have.

Hi all, I'm Dave, living in New Zealand, just bought a 2009 Yaris RS. Apparently only 100 of this model were ever imported into New Zealand, so I payed the "rare" tax. I heard it was a 'special order' by Toyota New Zealand. According to the Internet, 100 were imported, 93 remain, they are 1.8L, 6 speed manual, 5 door. Enjoying it so far but it might have a transmission problem.

Dennis from Greece here.
About a month ago I bought my first car, '06 Yaris 1.3, Automatic, 5-door, Clima.
The car is amazing, the fuel economy is out of this world. I enjoy it a lot, although it would be great if Toyota considered adding a 6th gear :P
Anyway, glad I'm here!

Hi everyone,
Not had a Japanese car before (only a Honda Motorbike years ago, which was good).
Fed up with German, Ford cars - wanted to try Japanese or Kia - a Toyota Yaris came our way - only problems are:
1.Key - only one which needs pressing 2 or 3 times to unlock and metal shaft is loose, 2. Wing mirror plastic shroud missing (seen some on Ebay -will spray paint myself),
3. Handbook missing - was able to download the handbook and technical service manuals online from somewhere.

New member here in Hawaii. This Yaris was an emergency purchase since my '17 Subaru Forester crapped out on me. Somehow I ended up with a Canadian Yaris. The speedo and odo are in kilometers.
I had an '02 Echo before the Forester and it was a good car. It had 300,000 miles on it when I sold it and it was still looking and running great. This Yaris looks similar with the same engine so I hope it lasts as long as the Echo.
I bought the Forester new thinking all Japanese cars are the same except for maybe Nissan. Boy was I wrong. The Subaru was a POS compared to my previous Toyota, nothing but problems. The parts are weak. I just had the clutch changed last year due to a squealing throwout bearing but then the clutch fork cracked. So the transmission had to come out again. Now the shop tells me the transmission is "sticking" and can't fix it. I don't know what do with. I don't care if I never see it again and take a total loss on it.
Now I'm of the opinion that Toyota makes the best cars period.

I just found this thread, already posted in the 3rd-gen forum.
Bought a 2012 Yaris LE 5-door hatchback on Feb. 10. Automatic transmission. Red, 97K miles, excellent condition. First few days have been great, upgraded to LED headlights.
Still hard to believe it does not have a tachometer, though. Could not tell you the last car I had with no tech. It was not this century.
Learning a lot from these forums.
